Hey

Ive got this plan to build a website.

There is many hosting services out there.
So that shouldn't be a problem o.

Domain name registration is an issue for me.
I dont know how it works

First of all who do i contact who's in charge of domain names ?
And what is the costs? and what is domain name parking.
some hosting companies charge something like 40 bucks p/m to
park your name on their server ?

And if i register lest say a .co.za name whats the monthly costs?
or a .com i assume that would be more expensive ?

is it a once off thing or would you have to pay p/m?

I need a registered name so it can be found on google, and
does any one know if sub domains can be found on google.

some companies will charge you R70 for the .co.za considering they do all the paper work for you. Contact who ever you plan to buy hosting from, they will register you for a nominal fee.

Agreed, it's very easy if you get your domain through your hosts and shouldn't cost you that much extra.

If you want to register a domain on co.za yourself you will need domain servers, this is also the reason why you get charged to park a domain.

I would advise that you get your hosts to manage the domain, makes life very easy. You can also have your domain managed by an ISP like IS but the once off cost is a little heavy.

If it is registered, what then ?

Will someone have to keep it alive by parking it for you?

What if i register a .za.net name and use a free hosting service that allows you to use your own registerd domain name?

Will it work or will i still need to park it?

you repay the registration fee every year, you have a host and thats all.

I still dont really understand this.

Who is in charge of domain names, who ultimately controls it in the end.
I cant understand how services can sell domain names, if they can why can i have one free?

Parking is just that, holding the domain. Hosts will charge you a fee to park a domain because you are using their servers but not necessarily hosting a Website. If you are hosting a Website with the host you don't normally get charged this fee.

From there you just need to pay your renewal fee, as KillerByte said.

Ok but if i paid 50 buckss or what ever for it why must i pay someone elese again to hold it.

or is it linked to a specific IP address ? (The server where its parked)

The domain needs to direct to a specific location.

Many decent hosting services will give you a free domain name when you sign up with them, especially if you sign a contract, and they will park for free.

So a Hostname needs to be assigned to an ip address , and the ip address.
is someone else's, and you have to pay to link to their IP.

What makes them better?

It's actually a lot easier than you think and you really only need to worry about MX records and so on if you are hosting things yourself or if you have your own mail server. If you sign up with a hosting company you won't have to worry about all this, they will take care of everything for you. Sit back, relax and concentrate on your Website.

Yes, currently PCF is being hosted by Hetzner but this will be changing soon. Absolutely nothing to do with the service they offer, they are very good.

What makes a host better is uptime, redundancy and service.

Oh ok just as long as we dont have downtime Cameron.

So what happens when you need to update your site. how do you go about doing that, and does it cost anything??

Do they (hetzner in this case) allow you do have admin rights on your site without it affecting uptime or what??

You get direct ftp access to your site as well as a control panel from which you can do a lot of things as well... Not sure about hetzner have it, but the rest do...

Updating is free... You basically pay for a part of the web server. Its like having your own server, without all the hassles of setup and maintenance...

I'm a total noob, but I administered my own site for a while. The host will give you a control panel, a lot like the CP for any forum (like this one).

There is no downtime for updates as you can basically usually just use your browser to over-write the files and administer the site. You don't even need to use ftp.

If I could do it anyone can, trust me.

So you basically do everything on your own PC (let's say you're updating one page), then you just press e.g. "synchronise" then the old page gets replaced by the one you just did?? :tellme:

You have username and password to your WWW root folder via FTP.
you then also get a MySQL username and Password for your database if you use joomla for instance.
