DSLR: 350D vs 400D

Post by flabby »

Anybody own either one of the Canon 350D or 400D?

Is it worthwhile spending +- R2000 more for the 400D?

nope... get a nikon D80

A friend of mine works for an ad agency and they just upgraded from the 350D to the 400D and he said he hasn't noticed that much of a difference. the RAW is a little better though... not sure if that applies to you.

I think it's basically just the better ccd, all other features are more or less the same. So, if you'd rather have 10MP than 8MP get the 400. On the other hand, if you take the 350, you'll have extra money for accessories.

I would like to get the D80, but that is another R3000-4000, and i'm not sure if that is incl. a lense, if not, at least another R2500.

Do you know where I can get the best prices?

I might consider the D80 if I am wrong with my estimates.

Nikon sucks compared to the new Canon's... Canon develop their own sensors, while Nikon and the rest use Sony developed sensors.

The EOS 400D has a bigger screen and 10MP as opposed to 8MP which might appeal to you. Not sure it's worth 2K extra though.

Canon 400D is good value for money, and Canon lenses are the best.
The Nikon D80 is a step up from 400D and more comparible to the 30D.

It sucks that the prices have down so much! My girlfriends 300D including some accessories was around 12K when she got it. Not the 350 and 400D are way under 10K... :(

Good value for money indeed though, as Mouba has said!

Also have a look at he Pentax K10D and Sony DC1, they are all in the same price range. And they all have their good and bad points, all depends on what you wanna do.
Google them for reviews, and chose the one that does the best at what you want.

well... when you're using someones products to bring in part of your salary - you get a bit attached...

I have shot with Canon, and Nikon - extensively - for years... and while Canon is a good product, it just doesn't touch the Nikon in my opinion.

Pick up a Nikon and feel how solidly its built, then do th same to a Canon.
Also... maybe take a trip overseas to any first world type country where photographers are able to use any product they choose because they are all available and you'll very quickly get the impression that Nikon is like your BMW/ Audi / Merc and Canon are generalyl seen as good toyotas...

I really dont have anything against canon - i just choose to shoot Nikon because i have had both (started on Canon (and was a canon fanboi)) and have changed over to nikon... Nikon glass is insane as well - seriously go shoot with some nice nikkor glass and see what you think

at the end of the day though - the camera means very little - its more about whose hands it in - really!

If I had the money, but currently I still use 35mm film SLR. One day when I've won the lotto / robbed a bank / am the CEO of Microsoft, I'll get my hands on a digital SLR camera.

I'm glad to see some Canon Fans!

Check out http://www.dpreview.com/

Make no mistake both canon & nikon are great.
I prefer the canon though.

Canon also holds a patent record

Thanx for the input.
The past couple of days I have done alot of google searches, read reviews etq.

Most reviews compare the 400D & D80 & Sony's new A100.
I don't care much for the Sony though, so it is down 2 the 400D and 80D.

I am not planning to use the camera for much more than a hobby, but I am concerned about the quality of the pics....

Seems like the nikon is a much better option than the canon concerning noise. The $ is just a pain.....

I guess i will go into a shop and get a feel 4 them both.

If I can find an offer for the nicon incl. the 18-70mm lense it will be brilliant, but i can only manage to find it with the 18-135mm, wich does not have stabilisation.

also keep an eye out for the 18-200 VR lens! its my favourite lens of all time...
but good approach go and get a feel for them and see what you think... also - and i say this with as much respect as possible - be VERY weary of what the slaes people tell you... they are driven by one thing - COMMISSION!

good luck

If I could afford it, I'd buy a Nikon, but now a 350D fits the wallet better. And I see its price is coming down nicely too.

tnx Scarlet, I have seen a couple of deals for the D80, incl the 18-200 lens, but unfortunately the best price i've found is in the region of R19000, and if i'm lucky i can find the D80 with the 18-70 for about R13500-14500, and that will be breaking the budget!!!!

At 1st I was thinkin abuut the 400D + an extra lense....

But, I've got another 2 months or so 2 decide....

BTW, the nikon uses SD, aposed to the canon that can use CF extII, what is your opinion?

A bit off the topic, You also get a connection to fit your camera so you can
shoot to your Ipod's drive

For some of the canon models you also get a Wifi adapter, that you attach to the body and it can then shoot to a FTP folder.

I think thats amazing.

I doupt that you will have a an issue with the different cards performance wise.

Most people say SD is faster, I think its the camera

The only thing i dont like about SD, is its tiny and you can loose it easily, but with CF card's again especially larger (as in data size) ones, if you drop them they can damage.

I was the exact opposite. Always been a huge Nikon fan, til I got started with the Canons and discovered they're much much better. Also read many reviews from pro's, and took the word of my girlfriend who is a professional photographer, and they all favour the Canons...

Both are definitely top top brands though. I own Nikon as well as Canon.

How well does the 350 do against newer cameras? Im really considering buying one, but I dont want to buy one that is really dated and not up to standard.

350D isn't dated at all. It's been replaced by the 400D now, but only minor things were updated really. 350D is definitely a worthwhile purchase, and you can get it at a very decent price nowadays...
