No no no, maxxis is allowed to do that. Same as my sig. You're allowed to have a BANNER with anything you want, hell, i could have a Prophecy banner if i want, but that banner may not LINK to the site.
That's how i link to my site AND my forum in my sig, by text, not by banner

The reason given by the development team is that it places more emphasis on the post content and less on the actual poster. There was quite a lot of mixed opinion on this - ask me nicely and I'll find the relevant discussion threads for you.
