I read that it was 03:00 UTC, which is 05:00 here. In that case, the Cape Town guys should be able to see it, but not the Durban people as the sun rises quite early over here.

And unfortunately the next lunar eclipse to hit South Africa will only be in seven years.

Here's the link.

People in Durban will be able to view the lunar eclipse for a short while, about 2 to 5 minutes before the sun rises tomorrow morning, which happens at 05:41.

Well, the eclipse begins at 03:00 and reaches its peak at 05:00. Meaning that at best, Cape Town will see it at 98% and Durban at about 90% before the sun begins to rise.

Next lunar eclipse that SA will be able to witness is in 7 years time ;)

Well so much for that idea. Totally overcast skies in Durban, with next to no chance of catching so much of a glimpse of the eclipse. Pff, only 5 hours of sleep just to watch rain fall :P

Apparently NASA blew up a satellite with a missile or something at the same time. Now that is something I wanted to see, but my dad only told me this morning. can anyone confirm the satellite story?

Was pretty beautiful. Saw it just before it was complete at 4:45/5:00. Clouds kept covering temporarily. Went back to bed at 5-ish.

And it’s not called the Total Lunar Eclipse for some sponsorship reason. Although much of the rest of the planet will have partial coverage, we get the whole thing and the best seats in the house are right here in our own backyard. . .

Don’t expect one of those protracted, dragged out, multi-week things. The opening ceremony begins at 20:23 on the evening of June 15, the main event getting underway from 21:22 and lasting until 23:03. Then straight into the closing festivities, everything wrapped up shortly after midnight.
