new cd-writer = crashed harddrives

a month ago i decided to invest in a cd-writer and dvd rom drive. I bought an aopen 16x dvd rom and a aopen 32x12x48 cd-writer.

i installed both drives and thereafter i tested the dvd drive with a dvd --> worked fine, then i tested the write function of the cd-writer --> worked fine and finally tested the read funtion of the cd-writer --> ... My PC stalled and when i tried to reboot, my hard drive was dead. my bios still read the drive as a maxtor 20gig but the error ´primary master boot failure´ occured.

i decided that this was a plain and simple hard drive crash and got a new maxtor 40gig. this hard drive worked fine until again i tried to use the read function of my cd-writer. F**K!, it crashed once more and my bios read the hard drive to be a maxtor 40gig.

is there a problem with my cd-writer or could it be something else?
