given that this is yet another of 'those' pretend-it-is-entirely-possible scenarios...

1) the turntable is capable of achieving a rotational speed just short that of light... and miraculously doesn't combust or succumb to the resulting centrifugal force, (ditto the hapless chopper).
2) the turntable's main drive components are linked through some fancy gadgetry to that of the chopper, ensuring perfectly timed responses to changes in rotor speed, within fractional milliseconds of them happening - designed to counter said rotation with little to no discernible delay.
3) the pilot is buck rodgers... a bullet chewing manly-man of a cyborg who shoots orphans for breakfast, thinks glass encrusted sandpaper makes the ideal loo-roll and comes fully equipped with all optional extras, ensuring near-perfect reflexes...

the chopper is probably on wheels... for all the difference that makes...

You do realise that, in all probability, very few people on this forum remember the TV show and even fewer the PC game?

A surprising amount of modern pseudoscience is coming out of the environmental sector. Perhaps it should not be so surprising given that environmentalism is political rather than scientific.

rustypup, You had us at a disadvantage, you never said the chopper was on wheels. That changes everything.

The wheels only make a difference if they can rotate. In which case the chopper would take off as the tail rotor (and the free moving wheels) would keep it from spinning around

doo_much, You mean not everyone loves sarcasm? What tripe. Everyone loves it.

Back to the topic on hand...assuming the above 4 points as laid out by rusty, one could have the motor running at the correct velocity for liftoff, whilst applying the wheels brakes until the turntable was at a high velocity. If you then released the brakes, the centrifugal force would shoot the helicopter off the side, at which point it would take off.

et Voila!

I disagree.

If you don't apply the brakes, the tail rotor will prevent the helicopter from spinning with the turntable, meaning the chopper will take off normally.

And no - not everyone loves tripe. :tongue6:

There is no such thing as centrifugal force. Its centripetal acceleration.

No.
An aeroplane does not use its wheels to generate its forward momentum. It uses a propeller/jet engine to generate its forward momentum.

All the wheels are going to do is spin faster while the aeroplane moves forward and takes off

 it's like a really bad case of VD... it never quite clears up...

we are done with the plane... we now have a helicopter on a rotating platter...

Monty, That's wrong. With the engine off, the aeroplane would move backwards. By putting the engines on, it holds the aeroplane in place.

Think of pulling off on a hill - you have to accelerate in order to hold the car still, else it rolls backwards and you kill Geri behind you. Same concept.

Yea thats why i'm saying it will stand still the weight of the plane will push it down onto the belt.
Since there is perfect traction and the belt accelerates as much as the wheels ,the thrust is canceled out

Edit And Since the belt's speed is dynamic moving just as fast as the wheels in reverse the belts speed would be = to the engine trust

where does arguing for the "no, it won't" camp get you?

bring the salt... you'll need it...

back to the chopper: stringfellow was a girls-blouse who loved nothing more than to spend time alone, fondling his cello... highly suspicious in itself, and not likely to overcome the laws of physics in order to see lift-off any time soon...

rustypup, Unless I have a HUGE flaw in my understanding of physics, I doubt there will be any eating of crow, or pie for that matter.

Back to the chopper - didn't we handle this already?
