It’s just two more days before ADV release the Neon Genesis Evangelion, DVD Platinum Complete Collection Holiday Edition.

I’m quite curious to know what’s the difference between this version and Platinum Perfect Collection that was released a little over two years ago

June 27th 2009, so we're seeing 2.0 December.

And FUNimation says we'll be getting 1.0 this year too.

Wth? There's a Shiki in my Eva...

And Asuka's now Asuka Langley Shikinami instead of Asuka Langley Soryu.

I heard about them changing Asuka's name, but Shinikami?
Perhaps it's german for red, or something.

That is pretty stupid IMO.
Why change the characters name?

Oh well, lets see how this turns out

How does this compare to the original series? Is it a complete remake or does it take off from episode 16 where Toji became the 4th child?

1.0 was a remake. We talked about this before I recall. 2.0 is not.

I've watched the series, the 4 platinum redone episodes aswell as End of evangelion. Anyone else that has should be familiar with the story to. So what is eva 1.01? Its a summarized, 90 minute movie of the first 6 episodes altered and edited for a new age.

It looks better than the first as expected. The voice overs for Shinji, Misato and his father are close to the original. Rei doesnt sound as lifeless as she did in the series, Ritsuko sounds a bit more mature and Shinjis friends ...sounds too american and wimpy. The voice subbing compared to the first gives a filled feeling to scenes but you cant help but get a feeling that its been child proofed even if the scenes in this is more bloody and gory than the first. Kinda like having sound censored when showing a porn movie. Whats the point? Your not really changing the rating of the movie that way.

The plot will leave fans with a look of WTF on their faces as some changes take place. Not trying to spoil but...
Spoiler (show)
Misato shows Shinji the 2nd angle before going into battle with the 5th. Rei is set up to get close to Shinji by his father. Kauru is awoken at the end of the episode. And his friends doesnt have the same start or feeling that they are his friends.
Other than that some scenes are cut short which is good. Shinji's run away is shorter but has less interaction with his friends. Episode 2 is acted out in an action scene. On the one hand its good. On the other it means we are in for a shock at the end.

For all its effort I give it 4/5. Its good, it can be better, it can be truer to the original but we are in for something different that will keep fans hooked.

I finally got Eva 1.11 on blueray yesterday. So how much different is it from 1.01? Well...

First off I had the ntsc dvd with 1.01 and the blueray region 2 with 1.11 on. Definition wise blue ray is superior with finer emotional detail more visible. The actual changes from 1.01 to 1.11 are small and doesnt really change or add that much extra. The one scene where that was added was the part where Ritsuko was in the eva cage with scuba gear that wasnt in 1.01. The rest just passed me by as I remember the original series better than the 1.01 movie.

Going from 1.01 to 1.11 isnt worth the extra cash unless you do something like from dvd to blue ray. The other thing that comes to mind is the banding issues that BD seems to have. It does tend to feel that your frames goes backwards during times where animation slowly shifts left or right and to a lesser extent up and down. Faster action doesnt have this effect. I also dont know if this is banding or just bad encoding. It's not a ragequit stop factor but it is annoying in 3 scenes.

So in conclusion:
If you have 1.01 then 1.11 isnt worth the extra bit.

Correcting the top post. Evangelion 2.22 was release on bluray and dvd 26 May 2010 in Japan. The english dubbed version will be making its way to us sometime next year.

There are torrents avalible and after hunting some down I decided its too much effort to wait while something downloads that will only be complete in a week or two with constant downloading. Fear not however for on youtube you can find a english subbed part 3-8 of the movie in low detail that still manages to leave something for you to look forward to when you get the dvd or bluray.

The first was slightly different from the series and this time around it's a lot different. Rei shows more emotion, Asuka is less of a biatch, the new pilot gets minimal screen time, the plot and events are changed dramaticly yet end up back to where the series ends on episode 19 with unite 01 going berserk. Evangelion did get a bit gory near the end but the feeling of death and destruction in this one almost matches that of End of Evangelion. With a little spoiler at the end, Kauro comes down from the moon in evangelion unit 06 and the words he uses makes you wonder if End of Evangelion doesnt tie into that of the rebuild series in alternative universes.
