Prime, the SB700 is an excellent flash.
If you are just starting with flash then I'd recommend just setting it to TTL and forget playing around with manual settings until you've got the hang of just using the flash in full auto mode.
Where ever possible bounce your flash off the ceiling (or walls for that matter) - just make sure the ceiling is white otherwise you will get some strange colour casts on peoples faces.
The SB700 manual is very detailed and makes for some heavy reading, but it does not miss anything so if there is something specific you need to do the manual will have the answer deeeeep within it's pages (download from here..

However if you are truly eager then the book for you is the Nikon Creative Lighting System. Be warned that you will want to buy more flashes after reading it.
