but it is perfect for what I need it for. Just a back up for my thousands of photos.

Makro have some fantastic deals. I got my dremel for a song. You have to be careful, somethings are a bit more pricey though. but they are always worth a look

Storms in the highveld = lightening strikes. Lightening strikes usually result in voltage surges and those will easily wipe a PC out, especially the magnitude from a lghtening strike. A Ups may help as will having you house wired up with proper surge arrestors, but even then, its not worth the risk.

And a direct hit which can happen, will certainly trip our mains breaker despite properly installed surge arrestors.
