Reminds me of a study done on New York cab drivers and how the size of their hippocampus grew after they started driving cabs.
Interesting.
Interesting.

I find it much more amusing to engage them in a dialogue and question their silly religious notions.Prime wrote:So, I deleted someone off book face because I found his religious posts offensive...
The really ignorant ones opinions make for fantastic reading. It ultimately accomplishes nothing of value - but then things that amuse me seldom do...
Sturat, that lovely lady who said that women who became pregnant as a result of a rape should have to keep their babies was a special delight. I wanted to carry on trolling her, but not using my real name. Please get her to join PCF.

So....um....people are full of contradictions.....but how do we know for certain that there is not some vastly superior being out there?

The more pertinent question is how do we know there is?StarPhoenix wrote:how do we know for certain that there is not some vastly superior being out there?
Are you willing to live your life based on the assumption that religion is right, or are you going to grow a spine and apply the same common sense to religion as you would to telemarketed diet plans that claim you can lose 70 mega-tonnes in 15 minutes while still stuffing your gaping maw with as much greasy sludge as you can, just by taking a pill before every meal.
If it sounds too good/far-fetched/made-up to be true, chances are it is.
O hai - I'm the most powerful being in the universe. Even tho you are all insignificant specs on a rock in the middle of nowhere, I love each and everyone of you very much. I'm also very insecure so please love me and worship me despite me giving you no real proof of my existence. If you don't I'll throw you in a fire forever!
blah blah blah only son etc...
K THNX BAI
Looking past mass religion to peoples individual weirdo beliefs (Intelligent design etc) it's likely there are beings superior to us out there. Maybe they are even responsible for creating this universe. But that's all conjecture. Looking at what we can prove today there's no sign of them. All we have to go on are some universal constants that could just as well be the result of random chance as it could be signs of an intelligent design.
It's all subjective.
I would not say I believe anything - but based on what is observable today, I conclude that religion and the supreme being hypotheses are the more fanciful and therefore the ones more likely to be wrong.
I'm happy to change this opinion should new facts come to light.
Say for example I die and meet God - although it may be too late by then

Re: the (mainly) non-Christians thread.
Something that I have been reading (fantasy, which has so many truths ) looked at the changing of time, the changing of people and customs and then questioned - if you have a god/dess, will they be stagnant... or change as well?
"Integrity" and "integer" both contain a Latin root meaning "whole; complete." The root sense, then, is that people may be said to be acting with integrity when their beliefs, words, and actions have a sense of unity or wholeness.

Re: the (mainly) non-Christians thread.
Do we still worship the Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Norse or Pagan gods No.
Are their influences still very strong in modern religions Yes.
There's your answer.

Re: the (mainly) non-Christians thread.
Erm, you are behind the times. There are still very strong worship for Norse and Pagan gods
Howver, "influence" is not really "change" is it? The people that worship might want to to take a particular aspect and twist it to their perception (and sometimes hammer it a bit to make it suit their own selfish needs) but does people's perception equate change in god?

Are you just arguing devils advocate?jee wrote:Howver, "influence" is not really "change" is it?
Gods DO change.
Look at Judaism - the religion split and God went to two extremes.
For one sub-sect of Jews he became a 3-headed softy who you can basically beat up all day
For another he became a bloodthirsty warmonger who approves of statutory rape, murder and suicide
And for the remainder he's still more-or-less the old testament God who is a mix of both...
That's 3 for the price of one...
