Re: Earthquake hits Japan and other natural disasters
In all honesty, I don't think there will ever be another chernobyl-esque disaster. There is now so much paranoia, and monitoring that unless someone does something as utterly stupid as the russians did, and that would take some effort, it can't happen.
The worlds nuclear reactor research sits with Westinghouse and Arevo and they've come up with some novel safety systems. The Westinghouse sets have the coolant tanks set up to flood the reactor in cooling water in the case of an emergency.

Well we are dealing with something that can possibly be worse than Chernobyl because of the Plutonium.

Correct. Working for a Japanese company and the majority of our supplies coming from Japan is now a nightmare. Short time here we come again...StarBound wrote:2 Days in the dark isnt minor.

Considering it's using waste fission products, I doubt it.Siemens wrote:Well we are dealing with something that can possibly be worse than Chernobyl because of the Plutonium.

Unless it's highly pure Plutonium 239, it is not going to pull a fatboy on us. Besides, you need the plutonium 239 to be formed into the right shape to achieve critical mass. You also need to pump the right energy into it.
Fukishima 1 is MOX fuel which means it contains depleted uranium and plutonium. And power grade plutonium contains atleast 19% Plutonium 240.

I really wish newspapers were fined every time they published sensationalist articles. All they've done is fuel ignorance and paranoia about nuclear energy.

On the zombie apocalypse matter, will they be left for dead zombies? Or will they be the slow resident evil zombies?
Re: Earthquake hits Japan and other natural disasters
http://saweatherobserver.blogspot.com/2 ... to-be.htmlThe Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is most likely to be decommissioned as it has caused many serious problems since a devastating earthquake and tsunami hit northeastern Japan on March 11, the top government spokesman said Sunday.
Might be for the better. Hopefully they will dispose of all the waste in a proper manner.
http://saweatherobserver.blogspot.com/2 ... -body.htmlRescue South Africa’s team in Japan conducted its first body recovery operation on Sunday after being deployed to one of the country’s worst affected areas.
Hats off to these guys and all the other rescuers from around the world.

Given that the reporters themselves don't understand, or take the time to understand, the issues, what do you expect?Prime wrote: I really wish newspapers were fined every time they published sensationalist articles. All they've done is fuel ignorance and paranoia about nuclear energy.

Re: Earthquake hits Japan and other natural disasters
Exactly, then the newspapers would enforce some responsibility on their staff and they'd find a reputable way to sell papers. What happened to honest reporting and journalists who put their lives on the line to expose the truth?Stuart wrote:Given that the reporters themselves don't understand, or take the time to understand, the issues, what do you expect?Prime wrote: I really wish newspapers were fined every time they published sensationalist articles. Nope - I was surprised how many quakes are actually happening all over the world all the time. But that area seems to be really active.
