Well how will they get here if we don't let them know that we exist. The first step towards that however is to find the direction to which we should send the invite.

Cool I can give this a try, though how big are the "work unit" downloads, and does it involve staying online 24/7...?

If they are advanced enough to travel this far, I think they will have a map of the galaxy and earth marked on it with a big X. Then again, why would they bother to come here in the first place with that kind of technology.

If they are out there and they want to meet us, they'll contact find us first.

What if they call and we cannot hear them.

the work units are about 300k or so when they are on your disk in flat file format. They dl with additional compression.

The Work Units are 350K each, and you don't need to be online 24/7.
The SETI@Home Client downloads a workunit (you can specify if you want it to connect or ask for a connection)then disconnects and does the processing. then it connects to send the result again.

Hey, Cammy, perhaps we can run a little ad for the E3 seti team in the mag sometime? Will hopefully get us a load new members, we might even become a force to be reckoned with ^_^

Who knows, we may actually even find some intelligent life while we're doing it !

The great thing is, if we do get a signal from, lets say, 2000 light years away, we'll know :-

1. The message was sent 2000 years ago
2. At current tech, it'll only take us 50000 years to get there !
3. Our reply will take 2000 years

Personally, I believe we already have aliens amongst us (not the illegal kind from Zim or Mocambique tho !)

Live Long and Prosper !
