"Integrity" and "integer" both contain a Latin root meaning "whole; complete." The root sense, then, is that people may be said to be acting with integrity when their beliefs, words, and actions have a sense of unity or wholeness.

I'm with G-boy on this topic..
Everything in the universe consists of little balls. Our planet is a little ball;relative to the universe;with us ;who also consist of molecules;living on it...
So what if there is little people living on atoms 8O

A flying carpet to take us to Pluto

Post by jee »

A GIANT flexible solar panel that is unfurled into space like a carpet could one day make long-haul space flight possible without using nuclear propulsion. Space scientist Rudolf Meyer at the University of California, Los Angeles, has designed a "flying carpet" formed of a solar-electric membrane. The membrane would supply power to an array of ion engines, in which xenon ions are attracted to a high-voltage grid and pushed out of a nozzle.

The proposed design will require significant advances in solar panel technology before it becomes a reality. If successful, it could provide an alternative to nuclear-powered spacecraft such as NASA's planned Prometheus mission to Jupiter and its moons. Nuclear power is considered undesirable because an accident, or the dumping of crippled or spent spacecraft, would pollute interplanetary space with radioactive material.

Flexible solar panel technology is still in its infancy, but Meyer is confident his idea is feasible, perhaps using gallium arsenide solar cells on a flexible polyester membrane.

The panels will need to weigh about 16 grams per square metre, rather than the hundreds of grams they now weigh.

this article from here but it appears in the New Scientist Magazine.

Earth desert dunes and Titan's dunes

The latest images from a close flyby last October by NASA's Cassini probe reveal that these dark areas are seas of sand, complete with vast complexes of startlingly Earthlike dunes.

The dunes are up to 150 meters (500 feet) tall and hundreds of kilometers long, dominating large areas of Titan's surface near the equator.

They are long, linear dunes similar to a type commonly seen in Namibia (see map), the Sahara, parts of Australia, and the Arabian Peninsula.

Researchers Look Beyond the Birth of the Universe

Post by jee »

Researchers look beyond the Birth of the Universe.
According to Einstein’s general theory of relativity, the Big Bang represents The Beginning, the grand event at which not only matter but space-time itself was born. While classical theories offer no clues about existence before that moment, a research team at Penn State has used quantum gravitational calculations to find threads that lead to an earlier time.

“General relativity can be used to describe the universe back to a point at which matter becomes so dense that its equations don’t hold up."

In research reported in the current issue of Physical Review Letters, the team shows that, prior to the Big Bang, there was a contracting universe with space-time geometry that otherwise is similar to that of our current expanding universe. As gravitational forces pulled this previous universe inward, it reached a point at which the quantum properties of space-time cause gravity to become repulsive, rather than attractive.

I think the rest of our "scientists" will find the the rest of the article interesting.

Interplanatary Internet?

Delicate Dips into the Martian Atmosphere

NASA’s newest mission to the red planet—the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO)—is working well as it shaves off altitude in order to swing into active science-gathering duties later this year.

The multi-tasking Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter will study the history of water on the red planet. In addition, it will become the first link in a communications bridge back to Earth—an “interplanetary Internet” that can be used by spacecraft in coming years.

Dark galaxy...
The discovery of VIRGOHI21 in 2005 seemed to provide the first evidence that dark galaxies existed. However, a number of researchers suggested that VIRGOHI21 was pulled out of the nearby galaxy NGC 4254 when another galaxy called NGC 4262 shot past it at 900 kilometres per second. Indeed, NGC 4254 has a single prominent arm of stars that curls round towards VIRGOHI21, suggesting some sort of link between the two.

three magnificent sections of the Veil Nebula, compliments of Hubble

Image
Stars in our Galaxy, and in other galaxies, are born and then die. How long a star lives depends on how massive it is. The more massive the star, the shorter its life. When a star significantly more massive than our Sun runs out of fuel, it collapses and blows itself apart in a catastrophic supernova explosion. A supernova releases so much light that it can outshine a whole galaxy of stars put together. The exploding star sweeps out a huge bubble in its surroundings, fringed with actual stellar debris along with material swept up by the blast wave. This glowing, brightly colored shell of gas forms a nebula that astronomers call a "supernova remnant."

Such a remnant can remain visible long after the initial explosion fades away. Scientists estimate that the Veil supernova explosion occurred some 5,000 to 10,000 years ago.
