The telephone call is a dying institution. The number of text messages sent monthly in the U.S. exploded from 14 billion in 2000 to 188 billion in 2010, according to a Pew Institute survey, and the trend shows no signs of abating. Not all of that growth has come out of the hide of old-fashioned phoning, but it is clearly taking a bite — particularly among the young.
Americans ages 18-29 send and receive an average of nearly 88 text messages per day, compared to 17 phone calls. The numbers change as we get older, with the overall frequency of all communication declining, but even in the 65 and over group, daily texting still edges calling 4.7 to 3.8. In the TIME mobility poll, 32% of all respondents said they'd rather communicate by text than phone, even with people they know very well. This is truer still in the workplace, where communication is between colleagues who are often not friends at all. "No more trying to find time to call and chit-chat," is how one poll respondent described the business appeal of texting over talking.
The problem, of course, is what's lost when that chit-chat goes.

Re: We never talk any more: The problem with text messaging
I love language but I must admit - I am not great on phone calls. Not that I am afraid to talk - it is that I don't like talking to someone when I cannot see their facial expressions. And Skype doesn't work for me as I don't want people to be able to see me. Again I am not shy - I have people watching me all day when I train. I like to dress "comfortably" when I am in front of the PC. Texting is simple and less complicated. Whatsapp is a brilliant program!

I dont like X, I don't have a problem with X - I just prefer Y. Not the regular Y but Y with a bunch of silly caveats.Tribble wrote:I love language but I must admit - I am not great on phone calls. Yes - which I am. But no to the turtle thing. Though, now that you have forced me to think about it - they are rather cool. Unless they are in hot water of course - like turtle soup. Guess they would be hot then.

Re: We never talk any more: The problem with text messaging
Why do I feel the real issue here is more about money and that telecom companies aren't making what they use to rather than "we don't talk to each other anymore face to face"?

Re: We never talk any more: The problem with text messaging
Telkom has lost a huge share of the communication market and are trying to recoup it with the 8TA promotions. The article is true - I hardly speak to friends much any more - we text - or text in Skype - or FB chat - or ..... well you get that we use text instead of our vocal chords.

And I prefer making calls as opposed to texting, which Is why I have a contract that gives me enough minutes.

And that is considered as comfortable? I Shall have to try that (next time I am alone). Think MIL would freak out just a little if I did that now though

Re: We never talk any more: The problem with text messaging
Do not tempt me - I am expected to behave.
KK - I have R300 free mins on my contract and I don't even use half. And it is a business phone. Most of my clients prefer to text too - or Whatsapp. A lot of conversations are carried out in email too. Face to face is preferable but not always possible.
