To avoid long posts with hasty, off-topic speeches to try seduce the sub-conscious of your mind to try appease the topic, I will get straight to the point.
I, along with another investor, have had a lengthy desire to set-up a static LAN venue, where the layout and structure would be permanent, and where there would be (at the same location), a place to chill, braai, and to do any other miscellaneous routines anyone would want to.
As of two weeks ago, that type of opportunity had presented itself.
Based in Queensburgh (Ignore the rumours), a medium sized business, with quite a large property, will be decommissioned from its current owner.
Luckily for us, that owner so happens to be my mother! So, with that in mind, a lot of the miscellaneous thoughts you as a reader might of forged until now should be answered.
Unfortunately, though, the owner wants to sell the business AND the building, which will make the materialization of this plan obsolete.
The only way that we could possibly continue with this, is if we create a large enough user-base that will support the idea.

Benefits of a Static LAN Area, in the LAN owned building:
- LANs can happen more than once a month.
- The LAN venue can be hired out for smaller LAN organisers.
- The infrastructure will always be in place, and will last longer.
- Seating can be booked as per user, or clan. Like an online cinema seating booking.
- Fees can be organised and set from the beginning of the LAN. This will exclude Rent, maintenance etc.
- Prices will be lower.
- The LAN hall can be used for training, lectures etc.
- Renting out of the hall for other events.
- Purchase a liqour licence to have a bar at all times.
- Have a large hall for a party area, 'chill zone', and any environment for, and from the LAN.
- Use the hall for storage. (eg, Resellers can rent space for a secure storage)
Future services of the Venue will be to start hosting dedicated e-commerce services, both on the Internet, and through Wireless (See http://www.wug.za.net/) for more details.

For research, we have gotten quite a lot done (Although you can never be too prepared), demonstrated below.
Maximum power usage on a 750w PSU, + 72w 24'' LCD Screen (All on non standby)
= 0.822 kWh
= 822 w
1 kWh = 93.71c (residential)
1 kWh = 113.09c (Business, scale 10 + 11) + R142.01 p/m Service charge
1 kWh = 101.86c (Business, scale 1) + R142.01 p/m Service charge
Therefore:
Using ((watts * hours used) / 1000) * Cost per kWh = Total Cost
-Based on 24h Usage
19.728 * Cost per kWh = Total Cost
Residential = 1848.71 c/d
Business, scale 10 + 11 = 2231.04 c/d
Business, scale 1 = 2009.49 c/d
Typical LAN weekend (44h = starting at 17h, ending at 13h)
36.168 * Cost per kWh = Total Cost
1pc = 3389.30c, 4119.54c, 3684.07
80pc = 271144c, 329569.2c, 294725.6
**Assuming the PC will be running at MAX output for the entire time.

A levy of R80 per person should be enough to well-maintain the LAN.If we were to make excessive noise past the 'Quiet time' (10pm), all we have to do is notify the surrounding populous, as well as the police, and we will be good.

I will be updating this post as much as possible, but I also call upon the community to forward ideas on the LAN, as well as what to research, and how to prioritize events.

Code: Select all
An alternative would be to find, and buy a piece of empty land, and build a hall upon that. Unfortunately, the initial overhead will be huge, and the fees for the gamer will increase.
