Re: First Car
My 1st car: 1992 Honda Ballade Luxline 150.
Was a good car, bullet proof motor, albeit too small for the body, imho.
My first real car, ie, the first car I bought myself, on my own: My current 2008 Honda Civic 2.2 diesel.
Every time I drive it, I just like it more and more.

o.O you lucky bastid... someone else bout your first car for you....
I'm in the process of selling my first car... Thing was meant to be a classic rebuild project but I just don't have the space to work on it so I'm flogging it... My bank account is seriously going to love me for it though.

First Car
I had a 1980-something Opel Kadette station wagon. Automatic, to boot. (I love driving automatic.)
First car ever purchased myself was a 92 Ford Sierra station wagon. That thing drove like a beast, and guzzled fuel like one too! I think the fuel savings paid for the monthly installments on my Elantra when I sold it a couple of years later.

First car bought for me: 1973 Austin Mini Cooper damn I loved that car. Had to sell it in the end because it was costing me to much in repairs that and just about every mechanic I took it to could not fix the head gasket problem...
First car Daewoo Lanos 1.6SX again another nice car but parts were becoming an issue and started costing me more and more to service so had to sell it .
Current car Daihatsu Sirion 1.3. So far so good...

Re: First Car
I'm on my 3rd car already that I had to buy myself... Started off with a 1973 VW Beetle that never actually ran very much. Then I got a 1983 Alfa Romeo Giulietta which was a pleasure to drive and was supposed to be the classic rebuild I mentioned above... And then my current car I got brand spanking new... I'm tired of old cars and old car troubles. But affordability will probably shoot me in the foot for my next car.

Re: First Car
I have two friends with minis from about that time, one with a clubman(in British racing green) and another has a mini cooper but with the 1275 engine.Anakha56 wrote:First car bought for me: 1973 Austin Mini Cooper damn I loved that car. We had a 1999 Daewoo nuberia 1.6sx(which replaced our 1996 Opel Astra 160IS), which was actually really good but as daewoo disappeared in about 2004 parts(except the parts for servicing) became difficult to find, it took ages to find a replacement rear tail light and it cost a fortune. But we got rid of it after the cam belt snapped(it had recently been replaced too) and ruined all the valves(it was the second time it had done this too)...also it had 220 00Km's on the clock and was beginning to smoke slightly on pull off.
I would love an Alfa, a late 80's GTV6 in back(or red) to be exact. And it depends what you buy, old cars dont necessarily give you any less problems than new onesRuadRauFlessa wrote:I got a 1983 Alfa Romeo Giulietta which was a pleasure to drive and was supposed to be the classic rebuild I mentioned above... Re: First Car
Ye I know Stig... but I got the ting cheap and the idea was to do a complete rebuild of the original as the 2.0 TI was produced in very limited numbers. a GTV6 is so oversupplied in SA its not even funny

My first car: Mercedes Benz 280se, much like this one:
Did a complete restore, unfortunately, the mechanical fuel injection is not the most reliable item ever made, so had to get rid of it.

How's the performance on it though? As I recall they didn't have a lot of power.THE_STIG wrote: But I too have a merc as my first car(and my current one) it is a 1999 C180 Classic(but with the leather interior and alloy wheels).

Re: First Car
It seems fine to me, the car is rather heavy and the pull of is quite slow but once it is moving then all is well......it cruses effortlessly at 120, accelerates from 100-120 in 5th gear very quickly and on the open road it does between 7.3-7.6L/100km. Also it goes up hills with no problem in 5th, in other cars I have drove you have to go down to 4th on the same hill.
I do know that the pre face-lifted C180 lacked power, but in 1998 they upgraded the fuel injection system so that it produced 170N.m and 130bhp.

Re: First Car
Hmm. There were about 2 people in my family who had C180s. Can't remember which year model, but I do remember their starter motors were also constantly giving problems. That and the lack of power were the source of constant complaints. In the end they got rid of them.THE_STIG wrote: I do know that the pre face-lifted C180 lacked power, but in 1998 they upgraded the fuel injection system so that it produced 170N.m and 130bhp.

Re: First Car
Yes that is the early C180 then, they fixed all that after they released the face-lifted model(winch they actually sold as the 2nd generation C-class). I will admit that if you are a boy racer then the pull of will annoy you, but if you are not a boy racer then it wont be a problem.

Re: First Car
But this was a young Clarkson, early in his career. This one is not biased, he explains the bad points and then the good ones.
But your 2 family members must have had early ones, because mine has 280 000Km on the clock and the starter motor has never once given any trouble. just the Mass air flow sensor(I think the early ones did not have this, but I am not sure) died once and one of the ignition coils had a crack in it which let moisture in and killed it.
