Do you tip the pizza man?
This subject has been on my mind for a while, and I've been wondering: When you order pizza (or any take-out for that matter) do you tip the driver delivering it to your house?
Reason being is that very few people realise exactly what the drivers face in bringing your food to your door.
I work for Scooters Pizza as a driver and I promise you if you knew half the things we face on the roads out there, you'd think twice before electing not to pay for that late order.
First: We are forced to drive on South African roads. Now I know a lot of you have had that afternoon traffic with idiot drivers and taxis hogging the road. We have to deal with that pretty much all the time. More than once I've nearly lost my life because of other inconsiderate drivers.
Second: We pay for late orders. Yes, believe it or not, the owners want to force us drivers to pay for any orders the customer won't pay for. Even one late order is enough to wipe out any earnings we've made for that evening. Most of the time, late orders aren't even our fault (eg. Kitchen staff forgetting to make an item, hoax customers, etc.)
Just this weekend cost me R600 in late orders because my bike broke down. The customers refused to pay - so I had to instead.
Third: We are targets. Plenty of times orders have been placed with the intention of mugging the driver. One of my very close friends has had bricks and glass bottles thrown at him and even barbed wire pulled across the road in front of him. People see our uniforms and know we carry money (we only hand in our cash-ups at the end of the shift). We risk our lives for R6 an hour, R8 a delivery.
We face permanent disability and death out there, simply for you to enjoy a hot meal.
So next time you order pizza, think of the poor guy having to drive out to your house, while it's raining cats & dogs, soaked to the bone, all for you to enjoy a warm meal. Think of the dangers we face.
So the question I pose to you: Do you tip the pizza man?

Yes I do, but not because of the danger the poor dude has to face. I tip because if you don't, next week on Pizza friday the poor dude will remember you did not tip and leave a suprise on your pizza...

Sorry to hear about the risk involved. But perhaps self defense classes and pepper spray and a stun gun sound like a good idea.
Perhaps the mere suggestion of writing a letter to head office and explaining the issues face, and perhaps safety deposit boxes in that drivers name in not completely out of the question or requesting a different area.
Yes I use to but now it would take scooters 6 hours to get here...

Pizza hereScooters Website wrote:And for those who want to be in the know here are some unfortunate terms & conditions to our awesome delivery promise: To ensure safe driving the 39-Minute delivery promise applies within pre-determined delivery areas. *DELIVERY IS FREE! A minimum order of R35 is required to qualify for Free Delivery. A R10 delivery fee will be charged to deliveries outside of the stores demarcated delivery area (exceptions apply). Scooters Pizza reserves the right to charge a delivery fee outside the specified delivery area, if deemed necessary.
Orders of more than 10 baked products do not qualify for the 39-Minute delivery promise. The delivery promise is applicable from tthe store to the first point-of-entry i.e. reception desk, security gate etc. Our drivers are not penalised for late deliveries. Through times of change one thing remains untouched and true: "IF IT'S LATE IT'S FREE... 100%" This is our pledge to you!
And no, I don't order out for food. Ever.

@doo_much: Yes really (at least at the store I work for). The owners decide on their own whether to follow T&C's.

Complain to Head Office. Hell, I'll sommer e-mail then right now and lambast them because they're talking waffle on their website.DarkStar wrote:@doo_much: Yes really (at least at the store I work for). The owners decide on their own whether to follow T&C's.

Darkstar, yes.
Also, if you can be the pizza guy, then you can be a waiter at any restaurant. While not something to aspire to, it is a gazillion times better- in pay and safety, no?

Re: Do you tip the pizza man?
The sad part is that quite a few of us actually love our jobs.
I mean, where else do you get paid to ride your motorcycle all over the show?
All I'm trying to do is spread awareness of the conditions we guys face out there.

And tell me, your motorcycle, would the be the one issued to you, or your own personal vehicle? Also, who pays for services? (and if you answer "personal" then I'm not even sure I'm allowed to post my opinion on that specific matter)DarkStar wrote:The sad part is that quite a few of us actually love our jobs.

Re: Do you tip the pizza man?
We do tip - depending on the bill - between R20 and R30 (if we have guests). We also don't care if it is a few mins late. Sometimes we have had the kitchen mess up and then we have got it free - but then they know the kitchen messed up.
Re: Do you tip the pizza man?
I always tip. Above the min 10%.
