I dont own a laptop so my answer to my question is no however rusty uses laptop very often...

So much so that I figured I decided that removing of dust and resetting the thermal paste was in order.
Lets just say that I now know how to fully disassemble and reassemble an HP550. I also know where the two long screws should go (they are sitting in my car at the moment, in a big tube thing so I don't lose them).
I have also learned a valuable lesson. Really tiny screw driver sets are of the utmost importance.
BL: I never manged to get to the heatsink. I got to the motherboard. I just couldn't go further. I had the will, but not small enough tools.

I have a stand with three fans underneath that keep my lappy (not my lap as I sit at the table) nice and cool. I cannot sit still long enough to have it on my lap. Besides - I would feel trapped.
I remember when this story (and the dangers of cell phones) hit a few years back and everyone in Tech said it was total rubbish.

LOL. well i have read somewhere that keeping your laptop on your lap also causes some skin issue a rash i think it was.
so thats two reasons not to keep it on your lap.
what about netbooks? do people hold those in their palms while working? haven't used one myself but seen it on adverts they show a netbook on the palm.
