as lightning occurs more on the highveld, the NE parts of SA why don't the people there pay more for insurance than the people in the SW, who get less lightning....

yeah... it can also jump from an open plug to your computer...
your just come through the phone lines
That has happened to me before, but because I had a Giagabyte mobo it lived on even though the LAN port and controller chip were fried from the encounter.
Actually, it depends where in the Western Cape you are - the far Karoo interior does the whole lightning thing. Admittedly, they get a lot less rain than the Highveld does.
(And for the uneducated, the Western Cape is not just mountains and fynbos. Anyone who has driven the N1 between Laingsburg and Three Sisters (the Western Cape/Northern Cape border) knows exactly what I'm talking about here.)
yes, i was talking about your area....
sometime next year, as soon as i get the data from SAWS who are a stingy lot, i will show you all exactly where the most lightning occurs in RSA

You forget the fact that in Gauteng, not everything is rusted. Whereas on the coast, even the plastic rusts, hence the insurance

That will be interesting, please send that to us when you get it.

I suggest signing on to a forum that has a few actuaries as members. They are the ones who work these things out.

i first gotta do the whole analysis of the data, and draw up the maps and find out why more lightning occurs on the highveld than the cape, and then present it to the insurance companies...

Will you be using topographical maps? Because maybe part of the reason is because it is closer to the clouds? Jo'Burg is 1753m closer to the clouds on average than Cape Town is as an example..
