Yup - Infantry School was the best place to be. Unlimited ammo and all the facilities required for adolescent fun.
And don't get me started about a fun Sunday afternoon with a .50 Browning, a few AK's and a bored NCO on duty.

Fun times. Sad to think what we were being moulded for. :?

My brother managed to procure one of the Navy's .303's a few years back. Beautiful yellow wood stock with copper inlays etc etc.

Which he then promptly had removed and fitted a sporting stock. Mother ugly thing. :|
Apparently the conversion was done in such a way that the old stock can be re-fitted which will hide the telescope mountings.

Its all fair and well what you guys have been saying... BUT a very crucial thing to remember and which also conspires to the .22 series being so deadly accurate is the weight of the projectile. the .300 and .303 has higher muzzle velocities than any .22 but the weight of the .300 projectiles get affected by gravity much more than a .22 projectile over the same distance. that is also why most hunters do prefer the .223 with a muzzle velocity of 650m/s at 150 grain and dead accurate at 400m without adjustment...

Oh and as a side note snipers prefer full metal jackets because the round doesn't loose form as much as other rounds and they can handle higher grain loads which give them the velocity they need for a kill shot over distances more than 800m

i am limited to ak 47s and colt. 45mm.

Where do you guys learn all this stuff about guns.. wait let me think.

you guys google about it right?

there are two different systems to measure bullet sizes (caliber). The first is in inches, a .300WSM is a .3 of an inch.

the other system is in metric. (Can't think of an example at the moment)

It can be a bit confusing in the beginning but if you talk about it enough it becomes easy to remember.

You are right. It feels more controlled actually, its weird to say but the .300WSM feels more like a surgical tool rather than a weapon.

I have seen the effects of guys having fun with a Browning. The muzzle loader club that I visit occasionally meets at the army base near the voortrekker monument. At the end of the range is a bunker which you shoot into, easily 20m high and 20m wide. There are bullet craters all around the sides. The guys that did that must have had a lot of fun that day.

Metric, for example, being a 5.56mm Nato round?

So just read an article on Cracked.

I did not know that the .44 Magnum has a meaner, older brother: the .500 Magnum!!!

I know of a .750 NE - but that gun was so heavy, it was one of the reasons a hunter could not carry his own gun. He was so tired, he could not keep it still enough to take a shot!

Yes, but that's a rifle, not a handgun.

I don't think you will feel your wrist for a week after a shot

Nah, due to that huge barrel, it kicks only slightly more than a .44 or .50 :P Or so they say...

I have heard hunters talk about big caliber rifles like the .600 and .750 and they said you get 1 shot and you are done. after that you can't move your arm for a few days so I can't see a .600 magnum having less impact

Yes but the recoil forces on a rifle and a hand gun act differently. Most of that force goes back into your shoulder on a rifle.

On a handgun such as that, because the barrel and your hand are not in line, it will apply a torque to your wrist. Torque = force x distance x sin(theta).

Which would lead me to believe that a .600 caliber 450+ grain would snap your wrist unless you are Vernon Koekemoer

Like I said. It's what 'they' say. It's in the article somewhere. Also note, a .600 handgun will never be as powerful as a .600 rifle.
