Places to get engaged in and around Jo'burg

Post by Jonboy »

So peeps,

I've ordered the ring, which will be ready next week, and am contemplating popping the question next Saturday (over the long weekend) or within the next month.

I'd appreciate some input with ideas for places to propose in and around Jhb. My initial thoughts are a restaurant with a great view. I've had a look at the restaurant at the Cradle of Humankind which looks fantastic with a view of the reserve, but I'd appreciated any other ideas from you guys.

How's about popping the question whilst airborne?

Thought of that, a friend of mine got engaged that way last month so will seem like a copycat idea.

That is a really good idea. They have a star gazing evening either that weekend or sometime in the month. There are two infact - heard it on the radio. What could be more romantic than looking up at the heavens.....

Will try and think of other ideas. Congratulations btw :D

Damn in this cold weather. Just looking out a damn window makes me non agreeable to anything. Run her a hot bath, make some nice food, get all cozy and then just ask.

Find a warm, sunny day and do a picnic at the botanical gardens or at some other (well kept) park..

If she likes lions - a visit to the Lion Park would be lovely and while she is playing with one of the cubs - then pop the question.

If you know someone who works in a building in Jhb or Sandton, you could arrange to use the roof. Layout a table, decorate the whole area with flowers. Turn it into a paradise. Get a string quartet...... well this actually depends on your financial status.

If she likes the theater, you could set out a lovely spread on a stage. I know there are some theaters that rent out time.

Take her to New Zealand, go snorkel at Goat Island, then pop the question.
Worked for me.

@ Monts ... I also like that idea but then weather is a large factor and considering you want to do it soon JB ... it may not be great.

Personally I do not like attention so the whole public place (like a resturant thing) is a bit  for me. But you would obviously know what your partner is like! A nice little weekend away or something though would be great! Along the lines of what Tribs and them have said.

Intimate and private

Thinking of dinner at the Westcliff overlooking the lights of Johannesburg if the weather's not great.

Thanks for all the suggestions though guys!

1. I wouldn't do anything particularly disctracting from the point. It can't come as a surprise / shock, like halfway on a rollercoaster kind of thing. Keep it simple but romantic.
Make a weekend out of it. Go away to a lodge up north on the Friday, in the evening with a glass of wine in front of the fireplace roasting marshmallows, pop the question. Then it leaves the rest of the weekend to celebrate.
You didn't mention a budget but since you're getting married I would imagine you're pretty ok in that department.

2. Organise for a horse ride for just the 2 of you and get the trail to a beautiful spot atop a mountain peak or anywhere with a nice view. Like a typical horse ride excursion take some snacks, have a romantic picnic along the way and when you're at your spot climb off your horse, go down on one knee while she's on her horse and ask her. Plenty of these spots in and around JHB, check google if you're interested to help you decide.

3. If you just wanna do the restaurant thing, try be different. Find a weekend when there's something good an at the theatre. Go to the theatre, then have some cocktails at a fancy upperclass quiet cocktail bar then to the dinner and the question.

Either way, you probably won't use anybodies ideas here 'cos you want it to be original and different. Good luck and let us know how it went.
