500 000 new jobs

Post by jee »

Our esteemed President promised half a million new jobs by the end of this year.
South Africa already has a major £60 billion infrastructure investment programme in place, and he said it would be fast-tracked to create 500,000 jobs by the end of the year, and four million by 2014.
source
The Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) was the main instrument he cited for creating jobs, though critics say these will not necessarily prove sustainable.

Do you think we can do it?
Do you think we can sustain the jobs?
What/where do you think we can create these jobs?

*nope, i'm not talking about Mokonyane's commercial sex work is an industry *

500 000 new jobs? Easily.

500 000 long-term jobs? Not so much.

Agree with Jamin. He could give them all black plastic bags and employ them to pick up trash. But making sure there is enough trash to keep them busy ..... that is another matter.

But how are we going to ensure it becomes long term?

Well, one of the President's main priorities is to eradicate crime and corruption...

Pretty-much the only way I can see doing this long-term is to move the country from exporting mostly raw materials and importing finished goods to making finished products locally. So yeah, massive investment in industry/production skills development and infrastructure. Kinda like the New Deal plan that lifted the US out of the Depression, or Barak Obama's current "Green Industrial Revolution" that's meant to do the same for the credit crunch.

I can't see our esteemed governors formulating, much less successfully implementing such an ambitious plan. These jobs will all be World Cup related. World Cup over, jobs gone, IMHO.

Mina.
