Clutch cable breaks... yet again
so my clutch cable broke... again.
On my way back from Megarom and it snapped. First time I've ever driven my car without a clutch.
Any reason why it would break since its only like 8 months old.

Re: Clutch cable breaks... yet again
the clutch itself has never been replaced to my knowledge. The car is second hand, and the mileage is 76000, I was actually planning to take it in for a minor service this coming week.

Re: Clutch cable breaks... yet again
We have a 4x4 bakkie which regularly snaps clutch cables. In our case it's because it keeps grinding against something else. So check that it's not the case with your car.

taking it to the mechanic today. Got to drive 50km to get there though. He's getting a replacement for me but I will ask him to look for a cause.

Re: Clutch cable breaks... yet again
What kind of car do you drive and what clutch cable do you buy.....
reasons.......
1.) clutch cable against or very close to heat sources such as radiator pipes or against the engine cause the cable to stretch and weaken.
2.) cheap clutch cable that cost like 60 to 100 bucks only normally last 6 to 12 months the only clutch cables that last longer are the original ones bought from the dealership, it's made using a different type of material, which normally cost like 300 or so bucks.....

I have an Opel Corsa Lite 1.4i
The clutch cable cost me a health R370 and that is excluding the labour.
I asked the mechanic regarding the clutch cable rubbing against something and he said something about the pressure plate could be running hot and that would the cause. Since I know like nothing about cars can those forumites that know please explain to me what exactly could cause the pressure plate to run hot or did I miss hear the guy?

Re: Clutch cable breaks... yet again
As far as i know a pressure plate is the part where it physically separate's the Engine from the Gearbox.
when you got the previous clutch cable installed it couldive been adjusted to be too long.
So when you push the clutch and change gears it doesn't release the pressure plate properly causing too much friction.
It couldive also burned the clutch, Or you have a bad habit by standing at a traffic light balancing the car on an uphill on the clutch instead of using the break or hand break.
By the Way.
A pressure plate is a 2 plates pushing onto one another, Think one is called pressure plate and the other is called a clutch plate. I think the material they use is asbestos.
Edit:.
Come to think of it.
Just kidding man

AFAIK Asbestos has been abandoned because all the greenies complained about it.SBSP wrote:As far as i know a pressure plate is the part where it physically separate's the Engine from the Gearbox.

If you are Citi golfs eint any better with that.
Clutch cables tend to tear through the firewall on Citi's
If i'm not mistaken you can actually buy a repair kit for that at golfwagen.
