Lease contracts

Am I just crazy or does any clause in a contract become null and void once a contract has reached its legal expiry age stipulated within the contract. Say you rent a property for 2 years and the contract stipulates that it is valid for the 24 months can they still hold you liable for a two month notice period after the contract has expired?

mmm. I know that with cellphone contracts you have to give them notice if you want the contract cancelled or else they just make it month-to-month.

But in the case of a cellphone contract it stipulates that the contract will continue on a month to month basis after the original expiry date. This means that the contract never really expires.

read over, and ask them. What is the actual problem?

They saying you have to give 2 months notice even though the contract is up.

Contract expires end of this month and I need to move now, even thought the contract will expire, they want me to give two months notice.

If there's a clause in the contract stating that you have to give 2 months notice, then my friend I'm afraid you have to.

But that does not make sense. If the contract has expired then anything within it carries no further weight. Or am I mistaken?

From what I know the notice period is only for when you terminate the contract prematurely.

If it's a clause in the contract it means it's something that has to be done. If you did not give 2 month's notice they can either make you stay those extra 2 months or you can move out and still be held liable for those 2 months rent.

In essence, if you did not give 2 months notice as you were supposed to do, you broke the contract.

muffinman, thanks that clears it up. Nothing to do then. Had a chat to them. They will not hold me liable for the rent if we get someone to move in before then
