come now... that's not playing with a full deck... how can the warning bells not be clanging in the background?... me, i'm the suspicious sort.. america votes a semi-black man into the presidency on the cusp of a financial meltdown - nothing strange about that at all....

GM says the car occupies the "same footprint" as the current presidential ride, but it is a little taller and the windows a little bigger to improve visibility. Limo One is believed to weigh between seven and eight tons, and spy shots suggest it rides on a GM medium-duty truck chassis propelled by a diesel engine. The body is sheathed in military-grade armor as much as 8 inches thick on the doors (each of which weighs as much as the cabin door on a Boeing 747, Motor Authority says). The armor reportedly is a mix of dual-hardness steel, aluminum, titanium and ceramic. The windows are ballistic glass said to be 5 inches thick, and Dan Neil of the Los Angeles Times says there's probably a woven Kevlar mat covering the floorboard to protect the car from blasts. The cabin is believed to feature a sealed air recirculation system to protect its occupants from chemical attacks.
Abolishment of slavery and equality are not the same thing. So perhaps they could not be owned as slaves - it does not mean that they had equal rights. This is the first time there is proof that they do have equal rights - and it is working.

You realise that here, black is the majority so the odds of the president being black are far higher?
Do you also realise that Obama is actually Coloured and that it is not going to change the way that america feels about africa as our politicians so naively think? America can't afford to give africa Aid, the money they are giving us is the same amount they need to bail their country out of its economic woes.
Don't get me wrong - nothing will change here. Well not that which we can see. But the people are upbeat today - and more positive (well those with dark skins are - not some of the paler brothers). I still think it is awesome and I wish him and them all the best.
And that right there is the problem, its false hope for them. Being a black or white president actually means nothing if you can't do the job.
People are putting too much emphasis into his skin colour.

Nope - because the whole world knows Bush caused it - and he is lily white

Of course they expect something in return, but if I was trying to keep my gay marriage center open, I wouldn't exactly be sending McCain money now would I

You don't honestly think Equal rights actually exist? Maybe some semblance.

You'd send Obama Money, but if the oil lobby wanted to build a gas station on your centre, i guarantee you, politicians would let them.
Go read Double wammy, and some of the other Carl hiaasen books, you learn quit abit about lobbying and politics and back stabbing

Ah I disagree - in sex we are willing - in politics we are not.
It could have been done before - fact is, it wasn't. It has taken how many years? We will probably feel the same way, one day in the very very distant future, when a white person is chosen in SA. And then we will be asked why it is such a big deal. It gives the illusion of equality - but then isn't most of what we live, experience and believe - merely an illusion.
Have any of you seen his plans for tech? I am impressed!
Protect the Openness of the Internet: Support the principle of network neutrality to preserve the benefits of open competition on the Internet.
Safeguard our Right to Privacy: Strengthen privacy protections for the digital age and harness the power of technology to hold government and business accountable for violations of personal privacy.
Deploy Next-Generation Broadband: Work towards true broadband in every community in America through a combination of reform of the Universal Service Fund, better use of the nation's wireless spectrum, promotion of next-generation facilities, technologies and applications, and new tax and loan incentives. America should lead the world in broadband penetration and Internet access.
Advance Stem Cell Research: Support increased stem cell research. Allow greater federal government funding on a wider array of stem cell lines.
The stem cell research sounds like a winner! But first he has to undo all the junk that the Bush Admin did

@anakha56: in politics, what is promised is rarely delivered... would be great if it ever came about, but modern governance is about control, not a relaxation thereof....
