2010: SA R2bn over-budget

Post by DeathStrike »

Cape Town - The budget overruns for South Africa's ten 2010 Soccer World Cup stadia will be north of R2bn, says deputy Finance Minister Jabu Moleketi.

He added that with the benefit of hindsight, South Africa would do things very differently when it came to managing the costs for an event like this.

"If we had just met the minimum Fifa requirements, we would be talking a very different story," said Moleketi referring to the complex designs host cities chose for their stadia as well as the inadequate costing done by host cities.

I could do think of better things to spend all that money on. Like fixing this country for one.

Yeah I gotta laugh, the only South Africans more negative than the ones here are the ones overseas.

R2bn over budget is huge though, they're going pretty extravagant with these stadiums...

would have been nice if some of that money could be used to pay the "volunteers" they want to help them during the games...
"Integrity" and "integer" both contain a Latin root meaning "whole; complete." The root sense, then, is that people may be said to be acting with integrity when their beliefs, words, and actions have a sense of unity or wholeness.

R2bn is alot of money to be over two years before the event! just imagine how much it might be come 2010! I just really hope that SA gets its act together, if not for its people, for the people of this continent!

why are you surprised?! These sorts of projects always go over budget and take longer than expected.

That said, it is a little soon to be going over budget.

All long term civil engineering projects are overrunning their budgets due to the huge increase in fuel prices and especially steel prices which were quite unexpected. The price of steel has almost doubled in the last year. These are probably the major contributing factors to the overruns. Although there are other factors such as the strikes as well as delays caused by red tape etc.

Yeah the steel prices are actually ridiculous they go up nearly 20% every month. Once the steel goes up , so does everything else..

are we even 100% sure that we ganna get the world cup here? i mean wat if they give it to the backup? then we wasted all that money building for sumthing that we won't get. I would say its better to improve the countries conditions first. we spend millions and billions on sumthing we may only use once. all that can go to hospitals and schools to improve conditions. Not to mention the houses and jobs we need. and the electricity problems. I mean if we don't have enough electricity in 2010. Then how do we watch the games on our tv? other than going to a match.

Anyway. this is just my opionion. don't wanna offend anybody.
