Ghost topics

Post by Synkronos »

Okay, I propose that, whenever mods move topics, they _don't_ leave a ghost topic, because of the duplication in the quickbar. I know it won't happen all that often, but I also feel that there is no real need for the ghosts - people can work out where it would get moved to.
I thought what I'd do was, I'd pretend I was one of those deaf-mutes.

I agree, I only did it once and realised it was causing problems.

Ok we have a situation now. Some want ghost topics left behind, others don't. Can we get an indiction whether ghost topics are to be left or not!?

If Cammy were to edit the quicklaunch bar code so that it didn't show up ghost topics, then I would support leaving ghosts. However, Cammy is always very busy, and I think until such time ghosts will just cause more problems than they're worth.

If you move a topic it doesn't matter, it still shows in the quick launch. Don't you okes have better things to moderate?

I'm only bring the issue up again because I was told moving topics without leaving a ghost behind is bad netiquette.

Yoda, we're new at this, so we're doing this by trial and error.

Personally, I don't like ghost-topics - people would never know which one to go to.

The ghost topic automatically takes you to the moved thread.

Ok, I don't want to make an issue of this, but here's my two cents.

On every single forum I visit, people ghost moved topics on purpose so as not to confuse people looking for that topic.

For instance, what if there was a hot topic that someone replied to on a Thursday, yet on Friday they went there hoping for a reply and it was gone ?

Now the quicklink bar would have moved on past that topic.

How the hell would that person know where the post had gone to ?

Now do you see why it's good sense to have them there ?

So far we have 5 votes for not leaving ghost topics, 1 vote for leaving them and one "don't care." Anyone else?

bb_matt: I agree, and ghosts are very useful. However, I feel that preserving the quick-launch bar is more important. If we could get it to ignore ghosts in the quick-launch, it would be ideal. However, Cammy is usually busy :/

I'm not voting on this. I'll leave the moved in the areas I've been assigned to moderate and you guys can leave them out in the ones you moderate.

It's not like we're going to be flooded with moved topics - it happens once in a while, so it's no big deal.

My vote: Leave the ghosts topics. I'm with bb_matt on this.

I've been to a few forums where ghost topics have been left and personally it's better to follow, especially if it's disappeared off the quick bar.
