Everything's different - what happened?

Post by Ron2K »

Plenty of things.

Backstory: Future Publishing (who do PCF in the UK) were kind of against us having the idea of having a website and forums in the first place - which threatened the future existence of both these website and forums. The folks at PCF HQ decided to future-proof our online and print existence by pushing the G3AR brand out there. So, they've launched their new online portal (check out g3ar.co.za) and will be able to a) provide more online content and b) have a better mag<->online link.

So... where does this leave the forums then?

Well, to fit in with the new direction, I've given it a lick of paint (yes, another new style...) and some serious restructuring. You'll notice three new major sections now: wired (tech), play (gaming) and chill (general chat). All content has been left alone, although some of it has been shuffled around the place. With the change in direction and new restructuring, the folks at PCF HQ should (in theory, anyway) be better able to promote our forums and get some decent traffic in (face it folks: these forums were slowly dying out).

TL;DR: we're not going anywhere. Just evolved a bit. ;)

Just a quick style note - I threw it together late last night, and there may be a few bugs with it. Any styling issues, drop me a PM.

Style bug: the "back to top" link on posts is borked. Will fix over the weekend. Thanks to Stuart and SykomantiS for letting me know.

Any chance you could make the old theme (the blue one which didn't look like phpBB vanilla) available too and just change the logo or something?

One more issue that's bugging me: why has "PCFormat" been reduced to a shy, little element in the corner of the logo while G3AR suddenly dominates it?

There is only one way I can sum up what I think of all this:

PCF is now a gaming forum? And multi-platform at that?

Is PCF going to be renamed to gear? or is gear a south african part?

If I remember correctly G3AR is the brainchild of a disgruntled former NAG employee. They're using PCF as leverage to promote it.

I'm a little confused too, sorry but the first post doesn't explain this clearly.

Gear is a gaming mag...No hardware the last I checked. Is Gear becoming the new PCformat or is Pcformat becoming more like gear...and god forbid, NAG :?

Or are you simply trying to rebrand the forums in which case, I think this is going to backfire the same way new coke did

GEAR use to be a seperate mini mag with hardware and wider game focus. PCF always handled the more technical side of the pc while NAG was always more focused on the gaming aspect.

But again its not clear what is going to happen to the mag. Is it staying PCF or going to be renamed to GEAR entirely for its south african part?
