A warning about multiple accounts

Post by Ron2K »

We've noticed lately that some users have been creating multiple accounts. Regardless of whatever reason you may have, multiple accounts are not permitted as per the forum rules.

If we discover dual accounts, our policy is as follows: the child accounts will be permanently banned, and the main account will receive a 7 day temp ban. Subsequent offences will result in all accounts in question being permanently banned, without exception.

If you have an issue with your existing account, or you believe that you have a valid reason for a new account, please contact a forum staff member regarding the issue. In exceptional circumstances, we may permit you to have a new account; we will silently permaban the old account in these circumstances.

Thanks for your co-operation.

I know 4 people on the forums as we are colleagues, and we all access the web through a single server and IP adress. Your solution is flawed unless you have another way of detecting dual accounts other than IP addresses.

Suggestion: insist on ID copies with new registrations

Uh, just exactly how do you determine when a user has multiple accounts?

So that's where Maxxis has been all this time. :eyebrow:

What about things like opera mini that work through a server?

you are currently the only user posting from your IP :P Oh that counts for your previous IP as well :P

I have tested Opera mini and it shows the actual IP of your device. Although the request goes through a server to increase the transfer rates you experience the core packet still carries the IP of your device and that is what is registered.

i created my account from my internet, with my IP address....
what will happen if i create an account using say, one of the varsity's computers or even jee's....
how will you then catch me out that i have multiple accounts?

To clear up a few things - I'm not going to go into any detail as to how we would detect duplicate accounts. Suffice to say that we have our ways and means, and most of it is based on the human (rather than machine) factor.

Okay, look, this is not so much a don't-do-it-or-we-will-catch-you issue. It's an if-we-catch-you-doing-it-this-will-result thread. We haven't appointed Anthro to examine everyone's IP address in detail, but it comes to our attention (by Ron's "ways and means") then the above would be the result.

The point? Don't be stupid. Just stick to one account and live with it.

Can you have multiple accounts if you can prove that you have multiple personality disorder?
