Wil Weaton's board gaming show: Tabletop

Post by Ron2K »

Yeah, I know this forum doesn't have a board gaming section (because I suppose that it would have a target market on this forum of one -- myself!), so I'm putting it in here. :P
Slashdot wrote:Wil Wheaton is working with Felicia Day on a new show called Tabletop, which will air on the YouTube Channel Geek and Sundry. The show will be about board games and gaming in general. This is how he describes it: 'My ulterior motive with Tabletop is to show by example how much fun it is to play boardgames. I want to show that Gamers aren't all a bunch of weirdoes who can't make eye contact when they talk to you, and that getting together for a game night is just as social and awesome as getting together to watch Sportsball, or to play poker, or for a LAN party, or whatever non-gamers do with their friends. I want to inspire people to try hobby games, and I want to remove the stigma associated with gaming and gamers.' The first show airs April 2nd.

So -- will he be reviewing Mystic Warlords of Ka'a, and describing how he defeated Sheldon? ;)

I play chess and Monopoly.

Does that count?

Trivial Pursuit, Chess, 30 Seconds.

I love to play games I often win at, though I usually win at tennis in my small group of friends and family who play every now and then, but only because they are even more pathetic at it than I am.

The best board game.

I also enjoy Smartass, Cranium (the novelty wears off rather quickly though), and Texas Hold'em Poker (if that qualifies).

Got bored of Risk, and it takes forever to play.

I used to play Trivial Pursuit, The MAD Game, Careers, Risk, Poleconomy, Balderdash,Pictionary, 30 Seconds, Snakes and Ladders, and Backgammon.
Got as far as learning how the pieces move in chess, but failed at planning strategies, being flexible, thinking ahead and anticipating my opponents moves. Sometimes a game would end with me conceding after having moved three pieces and then not knowing what to do next.

Erm, I'm pretty sure that the focus will be the D&D type of board game (which are the board games that I play, not the overly commercialized rubbish that the rest of you play). ;)

OK, Risk is decent, but Monopoly/30 Seconds/et. al.? Give me a break...

Hmpfh.

Ever since D&D became 'fashionable' in the mid '80s, it too has been 'overly commercialized'. So stop trying to be special.

Yes - and the type of music we like is REALLY satanic - isn't it? ;-)

Let's see what we can do. We need to find someone with the board and some rules.

We've got a board gaming group down here in CPT -- probably going to schedule a game of Arkham Horror (plus expansions) in mid-April.

(If you're interested, drop me a PM, I'll get you added to the mailing list.)

Ask around. There was a heck of a lot of flavours of the rules around even in the pre-internet times (when I last showed any interest).

Apparently guys throw hissy fits about which is best. :dontknow:

Sounds like a good incentive to investigate the game.

Yup. Also Gummie Bears, Care Bears, Masters of the Universe, Ghostbusters, Highlander, Coca Cola, any non-biblical books and skipping churche on a Sunday, which we were assured was a mortal sin. :run4hills:
