SOPA and the Blackout

Post by Stuart »

So Wikipedia is down for the SOPA blackout. Some smaller players have joined the party--see Web Hosting Solutions for example. Will it achieve anything?

Edit: Does this belong properly in the Piracy section?

fark is being unique again...

by unique i mean getting drunk and flooding itself with delicious spam...

what will it achieve? nothing. the denizens of the interwebs aren't pouring money into capital hill, (ie, informed opinions)... RIAA and their ilk are... let's see who wins...

obama was 'against' gitmo...
obama was 'against' involvement in foreign wars...

obama's track record says SOPA is a cert?

Yes, Fark was not worth the effort yesterday and today isn't looking good either with rickrolls getting green-lit.

There have been some anti-SOPA/PIPA developments as a result of the outcry, but not enough I fear.

Good that it is scrapped. Now they need to come up with a real solution though. So that 38mil they would have wasted can now be used for proper research/thinking into finding suitable solutions that doesn't breach privacy.

If you are presenting my stuff as your own and using it to directly make profit, then you go to jail.

If you are re-selling my stuff without my permission, then you go to jail.

Done and done!

When do I get my cheque?

Numerous websites, including heavyweights like Google, Wikipedia and Craigslist, were blacked out Wednesday to take part in the protest against SOPA and PIPA. The blackout protest was not just an impressive show of force, it also seemed to succeed in making millions of people who don’t usually follow every single piece of tech news aware of the bills.

Equally impressive was that so many different sites joined in on the protest, ranging from tech news sites like Wired to the usually much less serious Cheezburger network to even Greenpeace’s online presence. And the protest seemed to spark lots of creativity, with people exploring many different visual ways to take a stance against SOPA and PIPA. Check out our gallery below to see who blacked out their site, and how they did it:

We should get a some arab guy to run around the congress building with some nuke bombs attached to him, paint his face blue and let him shout "For freedom!" then boom! Although since everything is in the US they might not get the right message out of it.
