How copyright breeds pirates - Telecom Ericsson's version

Post by Ron2K »

Slashdot wrote:Entertainment industry lobby groups often describe file-sharers as thieves who refuse to pay for any type of digital content. But not everyone agrees with this view. Swedish telecom giant Ericsson sees copyright abuse as the underlying cause of the piracy problem. In a brilliant article, Rene Summer, Director of Government and Industry Relations at Ericsson, explains how copyright holders themselves actually breed pirates by clinging to outdated business methods. The most vocal rightsholder groups would ideally turn the Internet into a virtual police state, and at the other end of the spectrum there are groups that want to abolish copyright entirely.

Definitely agree with these points - when the rights holders treat all their customers as potential criminals, you know we have a serious problem.

Age old problem.
At the expense of over-simplifying:
Free doughnuts and muffins every morning in our office coffee shop was abolished because people arriving first would treat it as a free-for-all takeaway. Because less than 5% of employees took advantage 100% of us "suffer" the consequence.

the premise of his argument is flawed..

given the opportunity, most people will steal.. especially if it isn't cash or there is no immediately apparent victim... somewhere between the ears an argument takes place which magically justifies it all as ok to take whatever you want... as long as there's only a small chance of getting caught...

+1 to Sojourn's point...
