I assume your looking at gaming? The g870 is a pentium chip with 2 cores. An i3 is duel core but 4 threads and should be the better option.

Can we assume you already have DDR3 ram? Because 4gb will set you back around R200-300.

This might semi help. Shows there isn't that big a difference between the 2 cpus but then again those games weren't quad core demanding games to begin with and the card they used isn't budget.

An i3 is duel core but 4 threads and should be the better option.
all i3 cpu's do not have hyperthreading - so the i3 2100 and 2100T will only have two threads - so they only differ from the G850 in terms of clockspeeds and amount of cache

if you want the i3 that does 4 threads then you need the i3 2120 - thats the only i3 from the sandy bridge range that does hyperthreading

im not a huge fan of the H series of motherboards because they are extremely limiting but at least they will allow you to upgrade the CPU at a later stage ie you will need ivy bridge compatibility (not all socket 1155 mobo's will work with ivy bridge)

The H77 range should. H61/H67 was the sandy bridge models but he should look into the ivybridge support. i3 and g870 cpu has the same amount of cache and both are sandy architecture. Clock speed differs. Performance not so much. But if your tight on a budget you take what you get.

I dont know the AMD alternatives either or I might have said look there for your needs.

melodramatic much  ...... guy - i made a mistake cos i didnt check properly

i now stand corrected - so okay the cpu's do have hyperthreading and they will do 4 threads
