Currently I'm running Core 2 Duo 2.6ghz , 4gb RAM, Nvidia 8800GT, Windows 7 32bit.
While this machine has served me well over the last 3 years and is now up for replacement.
I've been given permission by the missus to spend my 13th cheque on a new pc in November (yes the married guys will understand).
So far, best I can find in my budget is this:
Case - Coolermaster USP-100
PSU - Corsair TX850w
CPU - i7 950
Mobo - MSI X58 PRO-E
Memory - Corsair TRX 1600 3 x 2gb
Cooling - Corsair H70 Water cooler
Video - Club SLI Combo 2 x 1gb GTX 460's
HDD - 500gb WD
DVDR - Generic cheapo
On LandmarkPC (here in Cape Town), this is R13 600ish, but I'm waiting for Nvidia's price cuts on the 460's / 470's to filter down. My problem is the Motherboard doesn't do Sata 6gb/sec, nor USB 3.0..
I could buy the components from different vendors, but I find that's usually a pain. Prophecy had some components different, and a Gigabyte motherboard that does Sata 6, USB 3.0 but then it's well over R14k, and they're not local.

Re: Yet another new pc build question
You will need to get usb3/sata6 at this point in time. It will most likely take over from next year. Other than that I take the OS will be windows 7 64-bit?

Why not AMD? Then with your next upgrade you will likely not need a new motherboard which is the case with Intel. They change sockets every year it seems.

Quite funny that you got permission from the missus, had to do the same.. he he he
what are you looking at spending on a motherboard? i got myself the Gigabyte X58a -UDR3R and that has SATA6 with USB 3 etc etc..., and it worked out to R2500 (give or take a few bucks)

Re: Yet another new pc build question
I'd say go have a look on the manufacturers site with regards to board layout. I replaced my board with one that has sata6/usb3 but the pci-e slots on the gigabyte were very poor and would have blocked each other.
