Project: RRF - Untitled

Post by RuadRauFlessa »

Ok so here I go again. Having some nice ideas for a case which, this time, I hope will become a reality.

So there I was sitting last night and I was thinking on how much I really dislike all the cases currently in the market. So why don't build our own. First thing I dislike about current cases is the whole side panel thing and the idea of having your drives at the top or front of the case (Goes for the PSU too). So I started off with a design, which I will post at a later stage (Propably over the weekend or on Monday), and the further I go with it the more I like it. The basic concept is to have a solid frame with 2 rachs which pulls out from the rear of the case. The case is also internally devided into two, one on the top for the mobo and one on the bottom for disks + psu + dvd-rom. The frame will consist of aluminium with side windows which will only show the top area. So you won't see any disks through it. The trays which you can pull out will be made from plexi. Front panel of the case will basically be reserved for fans. And that is basicaaly how far I got for the moment.

My big question now however is about airflow. Seing as the design I already have kind aprohibits me from having fans at the back of the case I was thinking of adding the extractors at the top of the case and to provide enough space at the top to mound a radiator below the fans. But is it going to be the optimal position for it :?: I was originally thinking of adding the radiator behind the fans in the front panel but I think that it will only add more heat to the box as the air will then pass over the radiator and then enter the case, potentially being quite hot when it gets past the radiator. My only other option I currently see is to have an external radiator.

Oh and a name would be nice. I am not good with names as you can propably see from my nick. Any ideas would be gr8.

I assume the case will be a tower, as opposed to a desktop design?

What about a fan on the left and right side of the case? If I am picturing what you are picturing, you could have some form of piping or conduit, to channel the air to the vital components (CPU, GPU, NB, SB and HDDs)??

Maybe if you can do a simple, rough design, it will help with being able to aid and refine the design process?

True be that.

Could work but it would be difficult to pull off as the whole thing would have to pull out with the mobo. Note the fans will be fixed to the main chassis

That is what I did in SketchUp. Will post it later. Just trying to dl it for my work pc as I don't have it installed here.

Hmmm, ok ya that could be tricky. How many fans do you intend having?

At the moment there is space in front for two rows of 4 fans and for two at the top with space for a rad

The space for the two rows of fans at the front came in when I wanted to keep the space for the rad. When I changed my mind I just kinda left the space unused.

Fair enough, I'm just pulling your leg dude, it just seemed slightly overkill...that said, why not go for larger fans at the front? They would provide better airflow with less noise...

The largest I can ge hold of is 140mm and that is what I bargained on. If I can get 240mm it would actually be great but from where?

How about the radiator fan off a small french car?

http://www.comairrotron.com/cgi-bin/dcf ... er_unit=mm

That's a 200mm fan with 330 CFM at 24V DC.

Apparently a fan from a laser printer can work too...

Holy craps...Looks like a plan, get two of those and you already have your side panels built

There are a few places I know who service/buy broken and 2nd hand printers, maybe they will have fans...you should try places like that.

Thos 360mm could be nice though, should be fairly quiet at lower voltage.

If I use 200mm fans The case would have to be at least 220 wide. It is almost 40mm more than my current rig. I might be sticking with 140mm as the case will be about 180mm wide.

40mm is only 4cm though, that's not exactly a big difference...I would go with the bigger fans - will provide better cooling with less noise.

Well - do you intend lanning with the thing? And where's the sketch? :P
