Project: ServBox

Post by DarkStar »

Well, it's just a minor project thing I'm doing, but I'm setting up a firewall server for my house.

Now, I don't have anywhere to house the hardware in, so I'm going to improvise.

I took an old motherboard box and cut open a few holes for the bits to stick out.

This is basically what it will look like (just 2 LAN cables coming out the front) when it's done.

Here's the inside:

And another from the front.

This is just a random project. Nothing too serious. I still need to get 1 more LAN card (looking for a spare/scrap one to steal, lol) and it will be ready.
I'll be using IPCop as the OS, and hopefully learn enough to teach other hopefuls who would want to use it.
Wish me luck, lol :)

I just tested it out.

It works. The IDE cable stops the HDD shorting out the mobo

I just need to get a 2nd network card and it will be perfect.

And plus, I'm already R350 short of my new screen. I don't have any money for a case.

So, if anyone's willing to donate...

At least get a piece of wood and mount the hardware to it.

I'll be cutting vent holes on the sides etc. and will be putting in a fan (if I can find a blower-type fan, bonus) into the box so that at least there's airflow.

Hopefully this weekend I can get a lan card and then finish off.

I've put it in a place that it won't get thrown away, and my mom knows about the box. The maid would have thrown it away buy now if she was going to.

I've set up everything, it boots and works fine. I can admin it from my PC while it sits nicely in its corner.

Just to let you people know, the hardware used is:
2.5GHz Celeron D (Socket 478)
512MB DDR400
10GB HDD
and an apparently broken 450W PSU (It wouldn't boot with my friend's PC, even without a GFX card in it).

lol, you know, the best part about this is the whole "PC in a box" idea.

Suits me. A small, out of the way box running 24-7 doing stuff.

I like it it. That's me, if you have a problem with it, then why post?

I like the idea and have thought about doing something similar quite a few times... just never had a second unused pc to use.

Lol i havnt got any problems with the PC in a box idea, sounds awsome to me, just that your ah, application (IMHO) is a bit sad... like you could have atleast got/made a better box, even if you used a bit of a bigger box so it all fits in(PSU aswell) and maybe spraypainted it black or sliver or something then it wouldnt be to bad...

again just IMHO....

Well, hey, it's a start.

I will neaten up everything in time, trust me. In fact, getting a bigger box will happen eventually, but before that I'd paint the current one to a more appealing appearance.

No. Don't paint it!!!

I like the box idea, I would've used a pizza box myself actually.

LOL.

Look, box mods like this are awesome, but they're only really cool as a joke IMO. I did something similar last week. I wanted to test all my Pico machine's hardware, so i build the entire machine into a tiny lunch box :P

I would never use the machine like this 24/7 though...
That guy that used to mod cases. Now I take photos. True story.
