Project: Paris Hilton

Post by Samaya »

So for the first time in 2 years (Thanks to Supanaut...) I am starting a new mod. It is for my wife and boy did I have a tough time. *[insert high pitched voice here]* "I want a red one", "It must be small" and "That other one is too loud, I don't like that"... oh and of course "It don't like all the fans" "It must be Ferrari" "blah, blah, blah"

So with the criteria set, I tried my hand at a bit of sketchup. I have finally settled on a design for a full ATX board. The chassis will measure h500mm x w160mm x d260mm. I have to put in a fan but haven't decided where to put it yet. It isn't 100% but the basics are there. It will be red perspex with a clear hood. I still have to decide how I am going to run the wiring and such but you can get the idea.

Anything I should change or add, just post it here.

Samaya, I've got one question for you. are you gonna make vents at the top? Coz all hot air moves up. So it means there will be hot air at the top of the case permanently.

BUT the idea looks awesome! cant wait for you to get it started.

it looks good, really good..

maybe just make sure the psu's fan can exhaust the air out the back and put a strong fan in somewhere near the top to take the heat out...

oh, and remember to spray the optical drive and everything else that may be visible so the colours match...

but otherwise, i really like it... 8)

I haven't decided yet but will most probably be only air cause its cheapest. There will be vents in the top to let hot air out. Maybe just a 120mm fan in the front to let air in. Its not a hectic PC at all. Its an old P4 2,8GHz Northwood. So although it gets hot its not like it will turn into vapour or carbon or anything. The mod is there to keep me busy while she does her stuff

I have turned this concept into a real mod as you can see from the title change. I have also changed my design considerably
and now looks like this:

Image

I have started and I hope you will enjoy this project for the next couple of weeks. It shouldn't take 2 years to complete...

Anyway so I got some Perspex and Plexi from Maizeys...
Image
There is a large black piece, medium sized red piece, medium sized clear and medium sized thick plexi in there.

Before I started cutting away and before I made a really big mess of the plexi, I did a general layout of the components

From the top (Front view)
Image

From the side (Side view)
Image

After that I started on the first piece.
Image

High powered sanding baby yeah!!!
Image

After about 20 minutes of hand sanding this one edge, it came out looking marvelous
Image

Ok so the piece is not yet done but I think its not too bad sofar.
Image

So tomorrow I will hand sand the other edges and start the front side aswell.

What will be the gap between your PSU and DVD drive there Samaya? Your currently blocking the vents for the PSU, thus cutting off airflow...

Im thinking you might get some heat issues... Maybe add some watercooling for the wife to keep it quiet? Still wont do for PSU if you dont want to blow a lot of money though...

Mmmm....

Hi Samaya,

Firstly, I'm glad to see you back in action :D

Secondly, this is quite a unique design which I have not seen before, so kudos for original thinking, Dude!

Thirdly, as a design thought on the mod: you have the PSU mounted at the bottom, where it is extracting air. I can't figure out where the hell the air would be coming in from...would you consider making slits in the curved side panel?
They could resemble ribs, perhaps...and be done more or less in the area of the HSF for the CPU...what do you think?

Looking real good so far :headbang:

Sorry for the confusion. The Drives will be mounted between 25mm and 30mm away from the PSU. I couldn't get my drives to hover in the air when I took the picture  . There will be slots for air ventilation but there is still a lot of work to be done. Keep an eye on this there will be some very nice modding happening here

i don't like your title :(
"Integrity" and "integer" both contain a Latin root meaning "whole; complete." The root sense, then, is that people may be said to be acting with integrity when their beliefs, words, and actions have a sense of unity or wholeness.

Ok small update as I didn't have much time today to mod

First off, I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas yesterday and that you got a lot of great presents

On with the modding:
I am going to put my PSU into the plexi against which it is going to mounted it, but not all the way through, no I am going to cut away 4mm of depth of a 8mm piece of thick plexi. Like so:
Image

Image
I am about half way with the cutting (It takes forever to do this - well kind of)

And how did I do it, you may ask? Why with a shiny new toy of course

Image
Image

A Dremel with its Router atachment. It is just plain awesome. Depending on the bit I use, I can have rounded edges, angled edges, strait cuts, depth cuts and I can even cut circles of varying sizes. Very impressive little tool.
