We have old legacy programs that are still in use. Sometimes we get the awesome job to do some maintenance work on these old programs.

Bloody code? The zombies were here?

if ever there was a language worthy of an endless list of expletives, it would be VB... actually VBA then VB...

I would agree there - not a language that comes easily. Luckily expletives do.

It puts the food on the table, so I am not complaining.

What are the best code comments you've encountered?

Post by Ron2K »

Inspired by a chat with RRF in the Spam Thread, as well as some gems I've found in my time, I thought I'd start this thread. :lol:

Found two gems in one of our stored procs:

Code: Select all

	/*
	* (WARNING: very long and very siff SQL about to follow!)
	*/

And at the end of said siff SQL:

Code: Select all

	-- that's over. thank the deity you believe in.

I was submitted a half written program in c#, done with the aid of drag and drop controls and functions by a complete chop. So after 3 or 4 people had tried to fix it, I got the job and found this at the imports sections of one of the classes.

'Code is haunted don't bother.

try changing databases from Access to SQL Compact 3.5, and that's what you'd get :)

I added one of my own yesterday. It was discovered by someone else today, much to the great mirth of all.

Code: Select all

Not strictly a comment, but I just came across this in one of our stored procedures :lol:
Spoiler: (show)

Code: Select all

SELECT * FROM [tablename] as 'ASOL' ...
ASOL being a compound of the table name in question :facepalm:

I left this above a particularly nasty piece of code that I wrote earlier this week:

Code: Select all

// here begins the Dark Magic - a ritual of Pain and Suffering to appease the Evil Gods (aka the Marketing Department).

@ rusty and RRF, I replaced the column names with a * in the interest of saving my own behind- same as I replaced the actual table name with [tablename] :wink:

And, it appears I'm not the only World of Warcraft addict in the department. This comment found just below a "sanity check":

Code: Select all

// your sanity has reached zero. your mind is now permanently under the control of Yogg-Saron.
// (http://www.wowhead.com/spell=63050 for those of you who don't play world of warcraft, or who
// don't get the obvious reference that blizzard made to the cthulhu mythos.)

Found this while debugging:

Code: Select all

 /*
                             _.--""--._
                            /  _    _  \
                         _  ( (_\  /_) )  _
                        { \._\   /\   /_./ }
                        /_"=-.}______{.-="_\
                         _  _.=("""")=._  _
                        (_'"_.-"`~~`"-._"'_)
                         {_"            "_}
