Post by SoulBlade »

So who's a programmer or is currently studying to be one? And what languages do you know/busy studying?

This also makes it easy to pm somebody a language related question. if knowing who knows what...
Just don't ask me to do ur homework! ;-)

Me (I finished my course)
Visual Basic 6 (Quite good at it)
VBA (Quite good at it)
Visual C++ (did it way back)
Java (jdk 1.3-4) (Quite good at it)
Cobol (I'm OK)
Delphi (just started)
VB.NET (not good at it)
JavaScript (not good at it)
HTML (OK)
ASP.NET (Out of practice)
SQL (OK)
PL/SQL (OK)

So what other talent is there on the forums?

How do u find Pascal creator? I just started out with Delphi (Pascal to some) and it feels like COBOL and C++ combined...

Guess I'm too used to JAVA and VB...

I've been a programmer for > 8 years now. Currently working with PL/SQL, AIX, COBOL and a bunch of other Oracle Tools.

All other languages I've worked with in the past are (almost) totally forgotten :-(

Pascal? LoL - probably the easiest language I've come across. Delphi is object orientated, whereas Pascal isn't. Well, version 7 is too, but not that you'd want to work with Pascal anyway. I've never worked with COBOL, but C++ confuses me because of the strange libraries and function names. :? For me something like Writeln('Hello'); is more logical than cout << "Hello";
I supposed I'd need to know more about C++ before I comment though.

Moses, you can code Assembly? LoL - anyone who can get that right deserves respect in my books... :P

I feel u bro. They gave us C++ in our first year! And VB in our 3rd year! WTF?

I actually prefer java or VB. Its easy and right to the point. C++ just makes my angry.

Assembly is very tough but quite useful for reverse engineering. I did not say that...

Alas I am not proficient in assembly. I am proficient enough in the following:

- VB (.NET, VB6)
- HTML/ASP/JScript/VBScript
- C++ (Mainly for .dll purposes in the pre .NET days)
- Pascal (I still don't know why Uni's choose pascal as a first year language.)
- SQL
Just when I got the hang of life they changed the rules.

I almost picked assembler in my 4th year.
I asked my lecturer what the pass rate was.
With a straight face he said 25%.

I retreived a new application form immediatly.

LOL. Well I'd love to know assembler... There's just so much you can do in assembly. C++ is a language I really have to learn now, because it's so universal and useful.

  • Pascal (last did at school, totally forgotten by now)
  • VB .NET (out of practice, but I can read it and figure out what it does)
  • C# (my primary language, until I finish learning C++)
  • ASP .NET (adequate)
  • Java (so-so)
  • Perl (the basics)
  • T-SQL (very good)

Last year I did:
C
C++
Delphi

This year (So far):
Java
VB.Net
SQL

I enjoyed doing C++ the most - short, concise, easy to read codes. Java is a bit more difficult, because of the extra mathematics we've done.

A question to the programmers: I notice that you've all listed several different languages; is knowledge and experience of all those languages necessary for one to be a good programmer? I mean, can't somebody just specialise in, say, C++?
