Title: Gantz
Mangaka: Hiroya Oku
Genre: adventure, drama, horror, mystery, psychological, romance, science fiction, supernatural (Seinen)

Plot: Somewhere in Tokyo, there is a room. In that room is a black sphere. Periodically, people who should otherwise have died are transferred to the room. There, the sphere gives them special suits and weapons, and sends them out on a mission to kill aliens here on Earth. While these missions take place, the rest of the world is largely oblivious to them. These missions are lethal - few participants survive them. The sphere calls the shots, and it's not the slightest bit nice. It's name... Gantz

The last thing Kei remembers is the train running over his body, crushing him. Now he finds himself in a room filled with strangers, all recently deceased, all resurrected by the strange black sphere known only as Gantz.
Their reprieve from death may only be temporary, however. Unless they complete the brutal missions that Gantz assigns, none of them will live long enough to leave the room. Is this strange "afterlife" real, or just a dream? All Kei and the others know is that if they fail the mission, they will all die again

The anime series starts tonight (Monday) on Animax. The series was edited for Japanese TV but we get to see the uncut/unedited version.

Uncut. Animax, I'm impressed....of course the dubbing will most probably nullify that impression.

Episode 2 tells me the show may not be all that good. Nevermind that it starts with the girl...um...having trouble with a little dog any normal person would kick across the room, my problem was how everyone reacts when blondy died...oh wait, that's right, they didn't.

The blonde guy gets ripped to peices right in front of everyone and not one of the characters reacted to that and start asking "Hey whose this guy", "must be the kids dad". Plus the cherry on the top was the Yakuza guy grabbing the big pissed off alien dad, by the shirt and yelling "Who the hell are you".

Granted they are all a bunch of strangers, but I'm sitting there thinking, did no one see the blonde guy have his body removed from his head!?

Also I find it funny the 1st grade teacher is the most trigger happy of the lot

Not really you see ADV has done an excellent job as far as the dub goes, hell they’ve even gone as far as to localize it. Let’s use episode 1 as an example:
Bored with his teacher’s lesson on geometry Kurono starts to imagine what she would look like without her blouse, next he tries to picture how her breasts might look without her bra, he notes the finer details such as the shape/form of the breast and nipple type. Unable to stop he turns his attention to the girls in his class picturing them in a complete state of undress. As one would expect he’s aroused and trying his utmost to hide it, unfortunately one of the girls noticed his stare, she’ able to put two and two together and informs the class of Kurono current state of discomfort. Kurono’s denials are met with laughter as many of his classmates ask him to stand up and prove to the class that he’s not aroused.
This is were the teacher (who kind of looks like a MILF) steps in with the following words to Kurono

- In English dubbed version she says “Let’s bone up on math here… and save that for when you get home?”
- In the uncut/unedited subtitled version she says “Save that for when you get home, will you?”
- In the edited fan sub she says “If that’s the case, please bear with it until it’s time to go home.

And

Later when Kurono takes the porno mag out the brown paper bag the following occurs
- In English dubbed version he says “What the ... Twenty-three hundred yen and no bush? What a rip! “ ( I guess the girl was only topless)
- In the uncut/unedited subtitled version he says “Twenty-three hundred yen? What a rip!
- In the edited fan sub he says nothing
It looks like ADV knows the particular target market for Gantz that’s most likely the reason they’ve decided localize it. So far I have no problems with the dub, thank heavens they didn’t decide to make the English voice actress sound like Kids from the Valley

Remember when you were between the ages of 6 and 12. You were able to climb the tallest tree, jump from the top of you’re house’s roof, you were able paddle you’re bike much faster than anyone else, you stepped in and protected you’re friends when they were bullied never caring if the bullies outnumber you or if they were older and stronger Yeah back then you knew no fear.

It all changed when you entered high school or when you enter puberty. Firstly you’re body changed with puberty; suddenly you’re this clumsy uncoordinated fool and you found out that in high school no one cares about the things you did when you were a kid.
You discovered that the code you lived by is hard to hold onto, standing up/ protecting the weak doesn’t make you any friends, instead you’re walking around with a bulls eye on your back attracting the wrong kind of attention - bullies are a million times stronger and more ruthless bringing knives to fist fights. This is when you realize that in order to survive you’ll have to keep head down and mind your own business. That’s no way to live but you do not want to become a victim. It would seem that whatever gifts, talents or skills you had as a kid were “sealed”

Somehow Hiroya Oku has created a character Kei Kurono that comprehends all of the above. For the first time I’ve found a character that I can identify with, he is probably one of the most amazing characters I’ve ever come across.

I’m sort of disappointed that Second Stage didn’t start this week as advertised.

Have to agree there. I quite enjoy it so far. Im just irritated with animax when they not only advertise that "second stage" was starting but also have the bloody episode descriptions still running. I wish they would remove their fingers from their **s.

Thank you kinder words have never been spoken.

Anyway Hiroya Oku has to be one sick puppy to come up with those scenes were the dog keeps aiming for Kishimoto’s “sweet spot”, the only places where I’ve heard things like that happen is in Amsterdam; Sweden and the Bible.

Initially I had a problem with the dub, unfortunately I’m not a linguist but I’ve been led to believe that the English dub’s pronunciation of certain names might be correct, take Kurono’s name as an example the R is silent and Gantz is pronounced as Ghents

I don’t know why but for some reason I prefer the Japanese pronunciation of the names as opposed to that of the dub.

I think Second Stage (The second season) starts later this month on Animax.

Guess one can’t trust the Dstv mag (Dish) because Season 2 did not start as advertised.

HmmZ...is that DSTV's fault or Animax's fault? :?

I'm amazed at how many people seem to like this show *cfonused*

I never really bother with manga and i'm guessin its allright.

The anime really frustrated me with the horrible slow pace, random pointless sexual themes, weakminded easy to hate characters, plot that goes like a rollercoaster -just when you think the show is going somewhere everyone dies :(

There has to be a clear line of communication between the two parties, I mean what‘s the point in providing one with a schedule that’s not accurate.

Besides working on Gantz, Hiroya Oku was also commissioned to create a character for Soul Caliber IV. This is what he came up with.

Her name is Shura but unfortunately like any woman she is tight lipped on the subject of her height; age or measurements

Hopefully he (Hiroya Oku ) can now give Gantz his full attention.

in my opinion gantz manga was way better than the anime, mainly because the manga continues where the anime just ends leaving you wanting more(hmmm this rings a bell, kinda like...Berserk...sigh).

Gantz 26x episode recap :
I don't understand all the hype for this anime. For me it has to be the most frustration anime I have even seen. Most of the time watching this anime I'm screaming at the characters because the f***ing Gantz ball selects the most retarded people with no chance of surviving and the jackasses just stand there doing nothing while one guy does all the work.

Example:

A: No! Don't go! You might die!
B: I FREAKING KILL IT!

A: We've got to help him!
Group: But how?
[silence]
A: He will die! We've got to help him!
Group: But how?
[silence]
A: He will die! We've got to help him!
Group: But how?
[silence]
A: He will die! We've got to help him!
Group: But how?
[silence]
A: He will die! We've got to help him!
Group: But how?
[silence]
A: He will die! We've got to help him!
Group: But how?
[silence]
A: He will die! We've got to help him!
Group: But how?
[silence]
A: He will die! We've got to help him!
Group: But how?
[silence]
A: He will die! We've got to help him!
Group: But how?

A: No way! He's dead!
Group: It can't be!
[cries]
Monster: WRAH!!
[everybody else dies]
