Apple Mac vs WinXP

Post by PaperCut »

I've been assigned a task at work...

To find out as much as I possibly can about Mac computers. Not the history behind it, like who started it and all that...

The real important stuff. The technical side of things.

A point in the right direction wouldn't hurt either...

Is this for the company to upgrade to macs?

If so...

Macs rock for an office environment. Ease of use and they look awesome.

unfortunately they are not compatible with all of the software apps in terms of most people being in a windows environment - and to be incompatible with other businesses could cause you to lose business - thus id stick with windows

unless the office is totally in isolation and no compliance is required witrh the rest of the world ie if you need graphics workstations etc or some other specialised setup for a specialised task without having to bother with compatibility

Well for the standard 8-5 office jock a mac is the best. Less ***** can go wrong.

Macs run a perfectly good version of microsoft office. That is what im referring to.

thats old school, most people with macs these days use a normal mouse you would find on any other pc

The OS does have a function for the second button, similar to what it does on windows

Mac is more compatible than you think with most proggies
Microsoft has ported alot of their software to the mac
And if worst comes to worst, you can use MAC virtual pc to run windows if need be

I love macs, If their support for latest games was better i would dump my pc for a G5 anyday

For designers I would recommend you take the same amount of cash you wanted to spend on a mac and buy him a killer PC with 2 19" Flat CRTs,

He'll love you for it.

Macs are crap for design. I used a G5 for a while and my dc AMD whips it.

The topic is misleading, are you not refering to apple mac vs pc

or OS vs XP

neway,i understand what you getting at!!

apple macs are the most awesome computers you can possibly use, everything about them is great, and they have always been ahead when it comes to technolgy.almost every mac has everything built in,from wifi, bluetooth, firewire, you name it and mac has it

yes macs are not compatible with all apps,o wait, thats just changed, the new intel macs, which i have also used, support windows xp as well as os x, which is great and the performance of xp on it is matched to the regular pc,but if you want to get a mac i would suggest getting os x with it

graphical power on macs are phenominal, the new ones come with x1600xt and although in our pc world those cards may not be topclass, when you use it on a mac you feel the real power!!

in the pc world we are stuck with putting together perfect combinations and thats where we lose alot to macs, we can never get a perfect combo, wheras macs have standard cards,eg.theres no gigabyte and msi etc in the graphics cards, its all one make and its the best you can get

maxxis you say macs are crap for design!! macs are made for design

theres a reason almost every autocad recommends mac,na d why adobe recommend it

and the reason why the g5 was so famous was because of its technolgy in beating wvery single other processor, and why mac changed to intel was because they found a processor that could surpass the g5 on performance

That's the biggest load of crap I've ever heard. When they actually benched them against the Opteron using the same benches the PowerPC core got raped sideways. That's why they are moving to Intel, their CPUs sucked.

the reason they swithced is because they had heating problems with the G5

you cant bench a g5 and a opteron, they made for totally different platforms

its like benching a ps2 and a pc

the architecture and sets of instructions are totally different

everybody that i know in the graphical and cad fields all say the g5 is a super computer compared to amd and intel pcs and i used cad on a mac g5 and its amazing, rendering using archicad is phenominal on the g5

And couldn't pass 3.2Ghz which IBM promised they would do the year it was launched.

Now that they have OS X for x86 instruction sets the G5 gets shown for the POS it really is. Besides that, they can still run theoretical benches cross platform and they picked up on the inefficiencies years ago. The only people who believed the G5 was faster (and marketed it to be) was Apple themselves.

1.9Ghz G5 getting owned by 1.83Ghz Yonah:

Note that the above bench is single threaded so Yonah being dual core won't affect the outcome.

So my question is, is there any signinficant difference between the two? Both OS wise and Hardware wise?

Would you suggest we buy the Mac or rather a high specced PC?

Post by arsenalfcfan »

Hi guys i would like to know if there is anyway to load OS X on a pc. I have seen it done but on a laptop only. It was a HP laptop not sure what one but it had everything intel besides the soundcard which was altech lansing it also had a widescreen. Was kinda busy working but i remember that because the guy bought a external creative sound card because OS X did not support his. I actually saw the PC boot OS X.

Yep, of course it is, since all of the new Mac's are, in fact, PCs.
That guy that used to mod cases. Now I take photos. True story.

Hell. Ive seen my AMD boot OSX.

Its easy but I cant help you do it since its not 100% legal to reverse engineer any software to make it work on hardware it was not designed for.

I am sorry but a powerful Opteron or Xeon processor slaughters the G5 for graphics performance.

Having said that though, I am quite a big fan of Macs, and am actually typing this message on my Mac laptop. I hated the older Mac operating systems, but OSX is really nice and I do prefer it to Windows.

Funny... I've been working professionally in graphics for seven years and have never had to use a Mac at work. And why? Because PC's are simply better for the work I do. The whole "Macs are better for graphics" attitude is a throwback to the 80's when Photoshop was developed on the Mac platform, but it's an outdated attitude and has been irrelevent for many years.

But for home use (web, emailing, word processing, etc), I love my Mac. And for everything else, I have a bunch of PCs.

Oh and regarding the one button mouse thing... come on, that was five years ago. I'm using a regular Logitech mouse with my Mac, and you've been able to do so for years.

Running OSX, or indeed any other Apple operating system, on a non-Mac machine is illegal.
