im not sure i follow, ive got a vista pc and it worked communicating with xp machines, basically the same as xp, set he ip range to be the same, set the file sharing, should work fine..thats how i got my one working. i didnt notice some option when you right click the network icon then choose connect to, and it will show you a list of the networks that it has recognised which it is connected to.
when in doubt, paddle out... ;)

and pinging them brings up nothing? does the xp machine see the vista one, or does it not work both ways, also try pinging the vista pc from the xp one.

I've tried networking my Moms PC (with XP) and my machine (when I was still using Vista) and I had to create a network on the XP machine and connect with the Vista. Still didnt work 100% :?

Frigging Microsoft, got no compatibility with their OS's

NO!!! that will hide vista from the network. it must be set to private. believe me. i have my vista pc networked with my xp laptop and my brothers xp pro machine
What I type has nothing to do with the people that employ me.
