Walking the Surfers' "Marathon"

Post by StarPhoenix »

At tea today, someone asked me whether I had walked the Surfers' Marathon, and if not, why not.
It is an 18km route that follows a stretch of beach, so it could be quite gruelling...like the time we had to walk from Kidd's Beach when I was at school...

Given a year to prepare for the next one, how should I go about preparing for such a walk-or should I think twice?

I walk to work every day [1.8km each way according to Google], and about 4 on Sundays when I go to visit my family.
On Saturdays, I go to the library or grocery shopping [about 700m to Vincent Park] after gym [20 minutes treadmill, 15 minutes bike, 5-10 minutes rowing machine, resistance training....] I haven't been able to go to gym after work as my friend has injured his foot and has been advised to rest it, but we used to go on Tuesdays and Thursdays before he became a father for about 40 minutes after work, or afterwards, for the same time on Wednesdays. I am going to start going on Tuesdays and Thursdays again from tomorrow, even if it is for a shorter time [I don't fancy walking home after 18H00]

What do you think I should be doing to prepare for an 18km walk-or do you think it might be a bit much for me?

18k walk is doable for almost anyone without a heart condition.

the KZN big walk is 25 km and they will let pretty much anyone attempt it...

50+km is when you will probably want to train beforehand...

Agreed.

I used to walk 18km to school and then 18km back again everyday. In the snow. Uphill. Both ways.

You'll be fine.

DBN had snow?

+ 1 To what the others have said. Did the same long walk home just to freak the parents out. That and the fact that it took me past the girls school :whistling:.
