Duane Vermeulen DHL Western Province -
All the names you expect to be there are there, with the exception of overseas players - not sure why they did not just add the prospects like Frans Steyn.

The 7 uncapped players, based on S15 performance thus far deserve to be in there.

I would not have even considered January and Clilliboy, mystery why they are there. Quotas?

I wouldn't have thought either John Smit or Ricky "kick-possession-away" Januarie would be included. That said I think Januarie and the coach are related if memory serves me correct

No relation between Ricky and the coach.

John Smith would have been included, always. He is the only person able to take up the captaincy.
Don't give me Victor Matfield, his on-field decision engine is fried.
So, if you exclude JS and VM, that leaves.... ummm, nobody.
Hay we could always ask Luke Watson to stand in, make the nation proud.

I think it's a good group of players with my own exceptions though.

These I would not have included:

Bryan Habana - Guaranteed he was picked with graduation goggles. He WAS good. He completely sucks now.
Adi Jacobs - Same for Adi
Elton Jantjies - WAY below par for S15, let alone RWC. He, along with Pat Lambie was earmarked as the wunderkinds of SA rugby. Only Pat lived up to the hype.
Ricky Januarie - One good try he scored in NZ and he's picked for life. Overweight for a scrummie, takes to long to clear the ball from the ruck.
Zane Kirchner - Some might flame me for this, but I would have picked Stefan Tereblanche. Much more BMT than Zane.
Bandise Maku - WTF!!!! Yes he's been player better since he's been at the Lions, but still not better than other hookers not picked. Deon Fourie anyone? Tiaan Liebenberg?
Lionel Mapoe - Probably picked for his pace, but that is not all a wing does these days. And I don't see him as a standout. Why not the other Ndungane brother? Gerhard vd Heever?
Wynand Olivier - Old meisiekind. He should become a model and leave rugby. He was a flash in the pan and has now been doused. Not good enough for RWC duty.
Dewaldt Potgieter - He plays ok. But not good enough for RWC.
Chiliboy Ralepelle - Again, a below par hooker. There are better out there.
Duane Vermeulen - Good S15 player. But that's it.

These players were supposedly picked on current S15 form and previous experience. But when I hear their names, they don't spring to mind as exceptional players. In all honesty, I don't see us winning and retaining the Webb Ellis trophy this year. Not with a bunch of over the hill players and mediocre newcomers.

I totally agree with your sentiments Ice - no way we will be contenders to the end.
I predict us falling at the quarters - and then only with a favorable pool draw.

Gerhard vd Heever should have been included, agree.
The guys to be dropped eventually as they form the squad, will make for interesting times and great sledging.

Yeah, although they will not all go, there will be some surprises. I see Brian Mujati is one name with the overseas players that might also be considered.

But the overseas guys are not on the list because this is just a bunch of players that will attend workshops, so that when the final group is picked, everyone will have been briefed on the logistics and the on-and off operations of the team.

But I see dark days ahead in the RWC. If the players were picked on S15 form alone, all the bulls players would not be included. Whats up with them BTW? Any blou bulle around?

Janee... if the BBulls were top-of-the-log on S15 you would have seen 10+ forum avvies/sigs up already.
The silence says it all.

Gaan ry 'n koei.

I had a bad feeling the bulls would suck this year... I was right. What I don't get is it's the same team practically that won the S14 last year.

Anyhow, that aside, I think the bokke can win the WC. Peter Pan must just pick based on merit, and not who drives him best up his behind.

John, Victor, Bakkie, Habana, Januarie, Jacobs etc mustn't be there. None of them play well enough to deserve a place there. Are they the best at teh moment? No. Tiaan Liebenberg, Andries Bekker, Gerhard van der Heever, Francois Hougaard, Patrick Lambie to name a few can fill their places.

As for our centre situation, WTF is Wynand still doing there?

And Pierre Spies? F-off...

But..but...the greater part of the Springbok game plan revolves around handing the ball back to the opposition so that they can run with it. :P

Mmm didn't see this until today. It makes sense that they kick away possession, then hope that either Habana or Jean d.V. intercepts and scores.

I wonder why they omit really good players like Keegan Daniel, and instead opt for players like Kirchner. What a disappointment he proved himself to be for the Bulls. Or Stegman, did he cost 50 penalty points against his team by himself this year or what?

Sure-fire way to score a good many tries against competent competition, that is.... :P

NZ taking it somewhat easily as expected with a clinical 1st half performance. Tonga commendably had a ferocious 2nd half, restricting the AB's to only 12 points. Very good game to watch.

After this south island display, the Boks have every reason to be very careful with their south island games. If I recall correctly, it was the Tonga team that gave us that scare in 2007, when Jake had to call the cavalry to pull the game out of the fire.

The important part to pay attention to is that NZ is not that impregnable. During that 10-15 minutes where Tonga held them on their try-line before the 5 pointer, you could see the frustration and annoyance on their faces.

Key to defeating them would be to contain that back 3/4 players and to dedicate somebody to keep an eye SBW, he practically advertised himself as a menace to be shut down - amazing ball skills on that chap.
