The Rugby Thread (All Leagues and Tournaments)

Post by ryanrich »

Okay I thought it necessary for a general rugby thread, for updates and news from whatever is happening rugby wise...

Man the Springboks are bad lately. Three straight losses. So what is the problem, please discuss...

I personally think it's time that young players be played, and guys given a chance based on merit and current playing form, as opposed to rank in the team based on previous accomplishments. I feel that too many guys are there because of what they're done before, and PdV is playing guys in the wrong positions. Jean De Villiers for instance, at wing, is madness... Du Jhong should start at centre with Fourie, and Aplon should be on wing with Hougaard. SA needs to secure Frans Steyn at Fullback, because he is just born for that position. Du Preez must stay at scrumhalf as he is still the best number 9 in the world, but Pienaar must be trained and kept at 9 to take his place. Number 10, Morne Steyn by far, and Butch James as his replacement. The entire front row needs serious work, eish, those players are looking past their sell by date...

Opinions, thoughts... GO!

Oh, oh, and check this pic I took in Cape Town on Koeberg Road, I gave the guy a huge THUMBS UP... :P

Whoop whoop, I'm a big All Blacks fan!!! :D

What a disgusting admission

My sisters view of your "All Black fan Status" yeeeechh

Teams have highs, teams have lows, when the Boks lost to Aus 53-6 , I think it was, White told them that they would win the next world cup, all thought he was crazy. This Tri-Nations has been poor this time around, we have played badly, missed first line tackles and made some bad tactical decisions.
The yellow cards did not help, the one given to Botha was deserved, the second game yellow was dubious and Fourie's sending off was over the top and a bad decision by the assistant referee.
The team look listless and unmotivated, sad, I am hoping for an improvement at home but think it would be unwise to make any drastic changes right now, Du Preez is sorely missed but no excuse really.
I am happy that the All Blacks are playing well, they are going to peak too soon, just as they did before the 2007 WC.

Sure hope you're right.

And agreed about Bakkies.

Going to see SA vs Aus at Soccer City. Yes, you may be jealous.

I'm a Bulls supporter - do you blame me for being unnaturally quiet when it comes to the Currie Cup? :x

Thanks. Jealousy now switched on at full impulse.

Ai ai ai that Bulls vs Cheetah's games was definitely one of the best in ages, always a close affair with those two...

Very jealous indeed GreyWolf, I would sell my kidney to go and watch the AB's vs Springboks game over there...

Well post then Catherine the Cat, you support three teams? Well that way you probably never get depressed by poor results.

Greywolf, man I am jealous!

Yeah was a great game by the Sharks, Pat Lambie is just awesome...

Also by the AB's, the Aussies were demolished. They made some mistakes, but looks like they have the Tri Nations all wrapped up now...

So tomorrow is going to absolutely huge! John Smit has his 100th test cap, and it's a great moment for SA rugby to play at such a stadium with 90,000 people from both sides. I hope the All Black's keep up their awesome form though. I predict a close encounter with the AB's winning by around 8 points...

Thank you for the new wallpaper, Ryan. ;-)

29-22 to the ABs in the dying moments of the game:
a game in which, from where I was sitting, the Men in Black
played the more attractive game ]perhaps I need new glasses?], while the 'Boks defended manfully
for the first 60 minutes or so before the dam wall burst [as I expected it to].

A question for the rugby buffs. [Sir Lancelot, I'm looking at you.]
Is it true that defence is more tiring than attack? If so, why?
Does an attacking style of play not also entail collisions and...er...
giving the opposition the runaround.

Did any of you notice a differencew in the AB game once Weepu was brought on?

So, after living in SA for almost 13 years now, I finally saw a rugby game up close. What a great atmosphere, what a disappointing result. My gf and I are both rugby n00bs, and even we noticed that the ABs played a much better game.

What can I say.

The AB's showed us why they are the dominant side in world rugby at the moment. They played well and backed themselves when they took those 3 points in the 73rd minute.

One thing that irks me is Bryan Habana. He went for the intercept on a couple of occasions and that led to a overlap. How daft can you be! The AB's knows this and probably exploited it. Good on them, but bad for Habana. He should be dropped and someone like Akona Ndungane should replace him.

Ricky January....nuff siad. He is not on par and I think PDV has now seen. If Fourie returns, Hougaard will replace him as the second choice 9. Hougaard really surprised me and I must say he played a VERY good game. Same with Flip van der Merwe. Also a good lock and I see there is life after Bakkies and Victor.

Juan de Jongh also tackled his heart out. That little man deserves his place in the squad purely on his defensive efforts. And when he gets the ball, he can run very well too.

John Smits place in the squad is debatable. I'm a big fan of John but I think he should retire. He was a great servant for SA rugby and deserves a place in the hall of fame, but I think he's is done playing.

I was delighted to see Juan Smith back. He also had a big game and he is a very good player.
I would also like to see Bismarck du Plessis back in the bok squad. He adds the mobility factor back into the no 2 jersey. He would have made that last tackle that Smit missed.

I touched on some players that stood out for me. Either good or bad. I think the boks lifted their game a LOT since returning from Australasia.

So, I think and hope we can only build on these games for the WC next year. It's going to be tough and I hope the AB's (like in the past) peaked to early.

Defensive play requires a huge number of tackles, far more than the probing side. In fact the players tackle count often results in a replacement if high. A lot more effort, energy goes into a tackle, often more than one player is involved. The defensive channels must attempt to make a first time tackle, otherwise more players need to run into another channel, not their own, causing energy loss.
