Yea, he effectively threw himself out of the semi, but saved his team. Smart move, but completely unsportmanlike.

Still, Ghana should have used the penalty and scored.

Reuters wrote: Eight percent of Russians believe their national team will win the World Cup, despite the fact that it never qualified for the tournament, an independent poll has showed.

Russian pride was shattered when its team was denied a place at the world's most-watched sporting event, currently underway in South Africa, when they were defeated by Slovenia in the qualifying stage.

The poll, conducted by Russia's Levada Center between the 18th and the 22nd of June, surveyed 1,600 Russian adults across 130 cities.

Brazil -- currently pegged a favorite by several bookmakers -- came top of the poll, with 33 percent of Russians believing the football powerhouse will take home the trophy.

Two percent of those polled said prime Russian tourist spot Turkey, also absent from the Cup, would win.

Despite the Russian team's absence, Moscow's bars are filled with excited fans ardently watching the matches. The Kremlin is also eagerly awaiting December's decision on whether or not its bid to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022 has been successful.

The Russian team has previously enjoyed a mixed record in international football, securing a historic semi-final place at the European Championship in 2008. However it failed to qualify for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

FIFA, which runs the World Cup, considers the Russian team the direct successor to the Soviet squad, whose pinnacle of sporting achievement was victory in the inaugural European Championships in Paris in 1960. It beat fellow Communists Yugoslavia.

A surprising amount of modern pseudoscience is coming out of the environmental sector. Perhaps it should not be so surprising given that environmentalism is political rather than scientific.

No, Ghana should have put away the penalty.

Yeah Ghana just did not have the BMT to win the match. They missed more penalties than they scored. It's such a same Ghana went out cause they were definately the best Chance Africa had to reach the final. They had all the support in the world and they basically had a semi final against Netherlands and not Brazil. Probably the best chance Africa will have till South African football starts to perform which will probably not happen in thus century.

Don't cry for us Argentina
The truth is you never had us
All through the ‘zela noise
We had persistence
We kept our promise
You lost your chances

Have we said too much?
There's nothing more we can think of to say to you.
But all you have to do is look at us now
That every word is true

WELL DONE GERMANY!!!!!! :yay:

Oh my GOSH!! How many of you watched the Paraguay/Spain game?! That was easily one of the best games I've seen. It was so boring in the first half. The second half was amazing!

Did we watch the same match?
I thought it was pathetic. Aside from David Villa Spain had absolutely nothing going for them.
Germany are will destroy them if they play like this on Wednesday.

i agree partially with this assessment - i thought that spain were not playing well because Xabi alonso had an off day - this affected the entire spanish midfield

but Germany play in a different way to Paraguay - they wont be so quick to close down the spanish players and if they allow them their quick short passing movement of the ball and let the spanish run the midfield the germans may have a harder time to score as many as they have managed so far ..... dont get me wrong - the germans will also run their head off but thats going to be more in the form of counterattacks rather than really pushing forward to allow spain no space to build from the back like the way the paraguayans did but if you let spain dominate the midfield you will struggle to get possession of the ball - and you cannot score if you dont get the ball

i still think that no one is reading the german style of play correctly - they allow you to have the ball and defend deep and then hit you on very quick counterattacks (they will have to change this against the spanish) - whereas the spanish depend on running the midfield for long spells of possession and eye of the needle type passes to their forwards - from spains point of view its a pity that fernando torres hasnt really shone in this world cup - but torres is used to being the central focus of attack at liverpool whilst for spain that job goes to Villa

its gonna be a real interesting semi-finals  and to be honest i wont be very surprised with a holland vs germany finals but the way things are going i could also be as wrong as the guys who predicted the all south american affair too

Nail on the head here!

I thought Paraguay was somewhat unlucky overall, and the ref horribly inconsistent.

Hope so, and then I hope Holland takes it (underdogs ; haven't won it before), though I won't be upset if Germany deservedly takes it either.

Got this in an email this morning...
Believe it or not....This world cup is already determined by the numbers....

1. Brazil won the World Cup in 1994; before that they also won in 1970.Adding 1970 + 1994= 3964
2. Argentina won its last World Cup in 1986; before that they also won in 1978.Adding 1978 + 1986= 3964
3. Germany won its last World Cup in 1990; before that they also won in 1974.Adding 1974 + 1990= 3964
4. Brazil also won the World Cup in 2002; before that they also won in 1962.Adding 1962+ 2002= 3964
5. Therefore if you want to know what nation is going to win the World Cup in 2010, you only have to subtract 2010 from the magic number that we have determined: 3964.
3964 minus 2010 = 1954... In 1954 the World Cup was won by Germany!!!

Probably not scientific... but pretty interesting..
It is quite interesting, but I'm still routing for Netherlands or Spain. It would be awesome for another World Cup first to happen here :).

"Probably not scientific"? Ya think? just selecting random wins by Brazil so we can come up with 3964? It should read, before 2002 they won it in 1994, before 1994 in 1970 and before 1970 in 1962. Kinda screws with the formula then. And, of course, there were those other teams that happened to win at times that doesn't conveniently fit the formula.
