Dashboard avatar to replace car owner manuals

Post by Ron2K »

Slashdot wrote:At one time not all that long ago, cars had a warning light on the dashboard that simply said 'ENGINE.' That's pretty vague. Really, it might just as well have said 'CAR.' Some newer automobiles now have codes that appear on the console, which the driver must then look up in an index in the vehicle's owner's manual. Working with Audi, Germany's Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM) Institute of Business Informatics is now working on taking things a step farther, with the development of an on-screen avatar that will talk to drivers, and even understand their spoken questions.

I'll be the first to admit that the thought of RRF's avvie talking to me really creeps me out. :P

If they ever introduce Clippy as the Avatar I will drive the car off the road and burn it...

Not a bad idea and I cant wait for them to bring it out to see the Top Gear response :P.

it would be super cool if The Fairy kept telling you what to do...
driver faster (in Yster's case) or driver slower (in Syko's case) or fill up with petrol and not ice cream......

 I wont like the car talking to me as all I would hear is: "you are exceeding the speed limit", " Warning Petrol below 1/4 tank", "stop being impatient"......

Oh I'd love having a proper chat with the chick in my avvie. Probably because I turned her....

On a side note.... wonder how far Audi is ahead of the rest of the world in terms of voice recognition. Those things always seem flawed to me no matter how much progress they make with it.
