Frag Lan Review 4-6 July 2008

Post by -Evax- »

At the latest edition of Frag Lan held at Crawford La Lucia School in Umhlanga, KZN, Clan FiB was proud to represent iGame in Call of Duty 4.

Clan FiB(KZN) is made up of Chris "Evax" Noble, Gary "Craolia" Noble, Stephen "Kaname" Bronner, Hayden "Pooks" Huntington and Sean "Scope" McCalgan. Scope is from PMB, so he had to make the drive to Kloof, where the rest of the team stay. We then packed into a Toyota Avanza and headed to Umhlanga.

FiB arrived at the lan, with the car packed full of PC's. As we arrived at the lan, the entrance hall was packed with people, but luckily we were able to walk past the hordes of people and enter the hall as Evax was tournament director at Frag lan. As we waited for the masses to enter the hall and set up , we started organising our own PC's and enjoying our McDonalds.

We were supplied with Desktop Backgrounds showcasing our clan name and sponsor, and they were on display throughout the lan.

The line seemed endless and the tournament organiser James, was overwhelmed with the near 200 people that entered through the doors that night, which was by far the busiest Frag to date. Me and Kaname started setting up the servers for CoD which would be held the following day. Dota and CS was up that night. The dota tourney proved to be popular with 8 teams entering along with FIB(for fun). NsF were crowned champions and FiB ended up 3rd. Not a bad position for a clan who is not dota orientated. The CSS comp only had 4 teams, and Clan cc were too much class for their fellow competitors and were miles above the pack.

The CoD4 Tourney finally started around midday, with a massive(in frag terms) 13 teams entering. Luckily the servers were set up, and the Double elimination Tournament got underway. We were playing with the latest BOTC rules( www.botc.co.za) and had around 7 dedicated servers for the games to be played on, which were provided by myself and Kaname's Firm, Fusion Event specialists.

We started off playing clan Fu510n, and enjoyed a healthy 13-0 win. Our main opposition rT1 also won 13-0 in their first round. The rT1 team consisted of Ivan "Kelynt" Dias(from clan niNja), Nicolas "Solidarity" Dias (Kelynts brother), David "Numb" Guimaraes(also clan niNja), Darryn "Dax" Hosking(nBk), and Stephen "Vitrolic" White(from dBx). As the rounds progressed it was becoming clear that these two teams would meet. This eventually happend for the first time in the Winners Bracket Semi Finals.

The map selection was done by elimination and the map District was finally chosen. The game got off to a nervy beginning and some excellent play by both teams. FiB were perhaps favourites as they had won the last few Frag Lans and had played as a team togeather. rT1 proved worthy opposition, and pinned them down , as they took the lead 12-8 needing only 1 more round to win. They were however attacking, perhaps the harder of the two on District. FiB managed to pull off an epic comeback to level the scores at 12-12 and force overtime. This was largely thanks to Kaname's brilliant sniping skills, who had dominated the whole map. The teams had a small break and resumed play to start overtime, which consists of 3 rounds on each side. FiB managed to eventually get the win completing an already unbelievable comeback and take the overtime 4-2.

The day progressed and rT1 continued to win their matches and FiB proceeded to the finals. rT1 managed to make it to the finals to face FiB for a second time. They however had to beat the reigning champions FiB twice if they wanted to be Frag Lan winners and take home some neat prizes, which included a 9600GT, a Thermaltake case, diVoom speakers and a few other goodies.

The map to be played was Strike, and FiB won the knife round and elected to defend first. FiB dominated defence and managed to pull off to a healthy lead. rT1 however had other plans, and defended like beasts to pull it to an 11-12 score , with FiB needing 1 round to win. The last round got underway , and it was left to Kelynt to face Scope and Kaname at B bombsite. Kaname started planting with his body being covered by the bomb site from the middle and Scope was hiding in the corner closest to spawn. Scope checked around the corner into spawn as Kelynt was arriving, and in a moment of great skill, Kelynt managed to kill both Scope and Kaname in a few seconds, hence levelling the scores and taking the game to overtime. rT1 managed to beat FiB in overtime resulting in another map having to be played.

The next map elimination was done and Crash was selected. rT1 were outmanouvered due to some magnificant skill by Pooks in A bombsite. The bomb had been planted and Pooks was at the top waiting for the defuse. He then managed to run down the stairs and unload his AK74-U clip into one while dodging bullets left right, and rushing down the stairs, he then continued to knife the "defuser" and win the round just in time. There were a few incidents of individual brilliance and in the end they won FiB a 13- win and to hold their title until the next lan.

The games played at Frag lan were some of the most epic battles I've ever been able to be amongst, and the atmosphere was unbelievable. FiB would like to thank the organisers of Frag Lan for an awesome event, as well as iGame for sponsoring us.

That concludes FiB's trip to Frag Lan until next month when they hope to defend their unbeaten run in KZN, and dominate the Cod4 Section.

Regards
The FiB Clan
