American sports - are they serious?
This may be construed as spam and if so, delete it.
On channel 230, RIGHT NOW, is the most ridiculous show I have ever seen on TV.
It is the American Roshambolles National Championships.
Like me, you probably have no idea what Roshambolles is? Well, it literally translates into "Rock, Paper, Scissors".
Yes, the American Rock, Paper, Scissors National Champs...
OMGWTF!
This must be the most ridiculous sport (???) ever.
Proudly South African, thank you very much.
I guess I should add that it was fairly tongue-in-cheek and slightly humourous (in an American humour Eddie Murphy type of way).

Well I guess when you're the greatest nation on earth you really have plenty of time to amuse yourself with nonsense.
Do you think professional Quake III is a real sport?

It fits with American mind sets. Mud wrestling, baseball, INDY, slap stick humour, cheesy movies.

Yeah, saw that too! They even had interviews with the contestants. They go telling the camera that they trained so hard, working on their wrist action and arm muscles to increase their ability to beat the other person. WTF! That is so daft!

Re: American sports - are they serious?
rustypup, Actually there is a world where many many countries do compete. Not the whole world of course, but many countries do (forget the number).

A surprising amount of modern pseudoscience is coming out of the environmental sector. Perhaps it should not be so surprising given that environmentalism is political rather than scientific.

Re: American sports - are they serious?
I believe it's called the World Series as it was originally sponsored by a newspaper called "The World". Or something like that.rustypup wrote:"World series" - really?.. so, the entire world participates?
Although, I do agree that the name is extremely misleading.

Re: American sports - are they serious?
Yes, i happen to like baseball, thank you.
Japan plays baseball, so does canada and i'm sure a few other nations.
I could argue that the rugby world cup is also misleading. Not every country plays rugby, nor cricket. You get my point.

In comparison a lot more countries play non American sports.Prime wrote:Yes, i happen to like baseball, thank you.

Cricket is popular in the west Indies, India, Auzzi, RSA, England, other ex colonies of Great Britain .
American Football is really only popular in America, as is basketball (some what popular in a few other countries, but not as many as cricket.).
Even the USA has a Rugby team.As does Ireland, Scotland, Wales, New Zealand, RSA, England, Auzzies, etc.

Re: American sports - are they serious?
There's actually lots of rugby and cricket playing countries - with regards to the World Cups, the top tier of teams get in automatically, and qualifying rounds are held for the remaining places; similar to the Soccer World Cup, but on not as great a scale.Prime wrote:I could argue that the rugby world cup is also misleading. EDIT: Actually, my comparison to the Soccer World Cup is incorrect - only the host team automatically qualifies there.
