It should, biber fans are clueless :P
naughty wrote:you can find many current stylus and cartridge combinations but for example an Ortofon Red would set you back around R1k (possibly more depending where you get it from) .... Here in Durban i can get most of the more popular brands of stylus from Kathrees in Beatrice Street - and i indeed got a Pioneer stylus from them at around R170

the problem with vinyl is not where to find the equipment but its where to find enough of the type of music that you like - i have two turntables but only around 30 records so while i could easily afford a much better turntable i dont have enough records to justify that expense

BTW nice amp and tape deck  and good work in restoring those
I hear there are some places scattered around the streets of joburg, will have a look when I feel brave enough to go walking around there. The turntable I have here is a Pioneer PL 512, pretty basic thing but besides for the broken stylus everything else including the belt is perfect

There are stacks of 12" and 7" records on the shelves in front of my car surely i can find something that I like in there.....think there is some pink Floyd there too

Thanks, all that I have to do to the amp now is replace all 8 of the source indicator bulbs(fitting the bulbs to the odd little holders looks to be a huge pain) and then replace the one on the dial pointer in the tuner, without which the station pre set will not work. And then find some suitable speakers for the amp, but meh do bookshelf speakers seem to be scarce and ridiculously expensive

Who is this 'biber' you are referring to? :eyebrow:
MOOD - Thirsty

A surprising amount of modern pseudoscience is coming out of the environmental sector. Perhaps it should not be so surprising given that environmentalism is political rather than scientific.

Is there nowhere else you can go in Durbs?
Beatrice street is a giant bus rank...
yeah there are other more popular places - but why pay the inflated amount that those other places will charge you because of their prettier location

an easier thing to do is to join up at AVforums and then ask around - there are plenty of vinyl specialists there and im sure you could find lots of parts cheaper and "safer" than walking around in jozie streets or having to visit Beatrice Street in Durbs :P

I shall do that. Not so keen on jhb CBD, some claim it is safe. But I am not so sure, not with most of Nigeria living there

I have finally got round to replacing the bulb on the tuners dial pointer. Rather painful and fiddly task, I also had to do some modifications since the original bulb is a 7.5 volt thing and I only have 12v bulbs(which are to big) and then 3volt bulbs which are the rights size. So I added in a voltage regulator based around a LM317t(on another little pcb) to supply the 3v the bulb needs.

working as it should again.

Almost, need to redo the buttons as there was some corrosion that ate away the paint on them

anyway some pics of the mostly completed clean and fix:

Tuner cleaned up really nice, the amp has a few scratches here and there and some fool had a sticker on the front which left some residue which will not go away :(

I found another case, one of those strange half heigh things where the psu obscures the cpu. But they work nicely for old at motherboards so I gathered the bits of pentium mmx system and put it back together

specs:

Pentium mmx 200mhz
64mb EDO ram
Asus sp-97v motherboard
ATI 3D rage II + graphics card
Sound Blaster AWE32 sound card(the value version not the fancy one with the expandable memory)
Some ancient ISA network card which still has a coaxial connector
4.3gb Seagate medalist

Lol, very cool. I remember when a 4GB HDD was pretty large. :) You going to play Carmageddon: Carpocalypse Now on it?

Yep, the 3d rage II is a pretty useless graphics card though so carmageddon 2 does not run so well. I have the first quake and some tomb raider installed now

I would love to find a 3dfx voodoo card(two voodoo 2's would be nice), and the cmos refuses to save any settings if you unplug the power. Tried 4 different batteries now so it must be something else.

That's weird. I used to play Carmageddon 2 on my Celeron 333MHz with an SiS 8MB onboard GFX, but not in "3d". Try it on 2D software rendered, IIRC.

I had an S3 Trio in the 166mmx, a 2mb. I then got the voodoo 3 that just owned everything in 2D.

It runs fine in software 2d, with a little tweaking it ran ok in 3d. Its only a 4mb card anyway, and the 333mhz Celeron is faster(I have two here, a slot 1 version and a socket 370)

I have two other s3 pci cards, A diamond stealth 64(s3 trio 64v+) and a expert colour s3 virge dx. Both are even slower than the ATI card :( i need to find a voodoo card or a pci version of an ati rage 128 or an early nvidia geforce card
